shuts off in drive

just changed my blown 700r-4 for a new one and fired it up Friday on the lift but when i put it in drive the wheels moved like it was suppose to but it just boggs down and cuts off. when i gave it some gas the tires spun faster and the car stayed on for a few seconds longer but still bogged down and shut off. my friend an ASE certified master mechanic said since the battery has been out for more than a month the car has to "learn how to idle again" and said he would bring his programmer with a idle trainer Wednesday. Could this be what it is? any other suggestions .............Thanks

Re: shuts off in drive

I'm wondering if the lock up solenoid is malfunctioining on your new tranny and is keeping the converter locked up, thus making it stall when you put it in gear. What if you keep your foot on the brake where the wheels can't move at all, does it stall immediatly?
