Engine wont shut off

Okay I just got a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula, with the 305 TBI, it was non running, i checked everything out and found out the pick up coil was bad in the distributor and changed it, now it runs fine but the only problem is now when i shut the key off the lights and gauges shut off but the motor, fuel pump and engine light stays on, only way to shut it off it pull the coil wire off the coil, what could be causing the engine not to cut off with the key? its the VAC system with the chip in the key, someone please help i need this car running or at least shut off when suppose to lol

Re: Engine wont shut off

Has the fuse panel been messed with at all? My car did once because the fuel pump had been hot-wired to the ECM ignition power fuse. The wire was just jammed into the back of the fuse box, and was shorting against one of the other fuses, giving the ECM full time power.

Re: Engine wont shut off

I honestly dont know, the car was parked for like a year and 1/2, i got it and fixed it in one day, now it wont shut off with the key, i noticed some electrical tape on a wire that goes from the coil wire to the Distributor, its a thick red wire, but i dont think that would cause it, could the ECM have rust thats making a contact on some circuts thats making it bypass the kill switch leads?, someone told me it might be my igniton box whereever that is i dunno, ill have to check if i see any rigged wires through out the car

Re: Engine wont shut off

theres a switch (blue plastic) on the top of the steering column (the ign. box) check the wiring to that, also try turning the ign. to accessory setting this may turn engine off. if it does theres a metal rod that runs on top of steering column to the ign. switch ,may need to bend it slightly ( be careful bends easy) check the wires on the starter and make sure theyre not touching (wires on center large post to the small post) it sounds like you do have a short or a wire feeding power to a fuse thats not suppose to have power when ign. is off. if you dont find anything wrong with ign. switch or starter, with engine running ,turn ign. to off position pull fuses out one at a time to see if this kills engine and go from there.hope this helps jimmy
