what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
seems that they put it in the fill cap of the transmission and the oil refill cap and not thru the gas cause i had one of those caps that needs a key. my girl friend did it while i was a sleep then left me.

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
Sugar does not dissolve neither in oil nor in gas. In that respect, the potential damage that can be expected is that of a granular contaminant in your engine, almost like sand. If poured in the fuel delivery system, it can clog the fuel filter, fuel delivery lines fuel injectors and also harm the fuel pump.
I hope you have not started your engine yet. I would try to change your engine oil and trans fluid, but still that would not guaranty getting rid of it completely. I have heard that in older, carburated engines it does no harm, but in newer engines that are more precise it has the potential to do far more harm. There is not really a true consensus on the harmfulness of sugar in the engine, non the lest it is a contaminant and the potential damage that can result from it can qualify the act as a felony.

I have no idea if sugar will dissolve in the oil or not even if the oil gets hot. I'd say run the engine until it gets hot then change the oil and filter. Go for a drive and change the tranny filter and oil.
If the engine hasn't been started, pull the valve cover and use a vacuum to suck the sugar out from under it. I doubt any got into the crankcase.

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
as far as the trans , if you did not start it all the sugar will be sitting right in the pan . i would drop it before starting and clean the pan out , drive it for a week and then change the fluid again with the filter .
the motor i would remove the valve cover and vacuum as much out as i can because most of it should still be sitting on top of the head , run it till it warms up and then change the oil and filter .
then if any damage occurs after that i would sue the pig ..

wow what a bitch she seems to be thorough to make your life hell. might want to replace that relay before you drive so the fan can turn on and cool the motor so you dont overheat.

It's amazing the mentality of some people who are just looking to receive a criminal record. Somehow I'd check a lot more things also such as brake lines and report the vandalism to the cops.

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
Drop the trans pan drop the oil pan clean both of them. Like someone said above it will have a sand paper effect on your engine and trans. After you clean both pans use the old gasket and put both pans back on. Put 4qt of crappy oil through your engine and 3 pints of tranny fluid through the trans dipstik. Drain out oil and trans fluid. Replace the old gaskets with new ones and bolt the pans back on. Pray that no sugar got in the valve body of the trans (if you have an auto) What did you do to her that she put sugar in your car?? I just want to know so I dont make the same mistake.

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
Well, I'd rather rebuild an engine and tranny than spend 6 times that doing bodywork. I'm not sure whether you're lucky or not. I also agree with just dropping the tranny pan, cleaning it out and just flush the fill tube well. As for the engine, If the car's been down 2 years, what's another couple weeks/months to pull the engine and make sure it's 100%?
This is all assuming you haven't drove it yet.
I'm impressed she knew which relay went to the cooling fan. I've hard-wired a switch into mine and I still can't remember which one is which.

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
definitely not cool. But something really sounds fishy about this whole story.
First it's your girfriend that broke up with you that morning while you were sleeping.
Then it's your ex wife that you left because she cheated on you and she just found out you are getting a settlement.
Then she's systematically sabatoging your car (something most (all?) people wouldn't go through the time to do), especially if they're doing it with you nearby possibly catching them and stopping them, getting them arrested and what not.
I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but there's a lot of contradictory things going on and the only thing keeping me from totally not believing it is that i can't figure out why someone would lie about this, unless the sugar incident was completely separate from the fan relay one and they're covering up something they did or a friend did without wanting to seem stupid. :-/
edit: like maybe copying a certain myth busting episode or such.

sugar cant dissolve in fuel or oil, unless there is water or moisture present, so if its in the gas tank itll just sit on the bottom and take up room. if in the oil, id just take off the valve cover and get it all out, also change your tranny fluid.
atleast she didnt put lye all over your paint

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
assuming the story is true (real huge assumption), then they did what they did so it wouldn't be readily visible that something was done. So that throws out anything damaging to the paint.
the "revenge" would have been much more effective (assuming it would have not been caught) if she used water rather than sugar. Strange mistake to make with someone smart enough to know where the fan relay is.

Id also suggest locking your car doors. You lock your gas cap but not your doors? Unless you have hood pins... in which case... install a latch

Well, At least she wasn't smart enough to put valve grinding compound in your engine. That would REALLY suck!

Ha. Interesting observation. As a woman I know personally there are some things I would never do to a man (boyfriend, husband, acquiantance) and those things include vandalizing his car or personal property in any way. Do unto others..... Some of these b****s need to get a reality check!

Re: what happens when some one put sugar in my engine or tranny
sugar when poured into oil filler will find its way to the oil pan. sugar does not dissolve in engine oil. sugar has a melting point of 348 F and engine oil reaches about 220F. sugar can melt/carmelize if your engine overheats though, but under normal circumstances sugar will remain granular,
the best way to clear the sugar is to drop the oil pan, remove the pickup tube and clean everything out.
if you cant for some reason, ie the oil pan needs crossmembers removed, subframes dropped, steering assembly disconnected etc etc....then do the following:
drain all the oil. use a coat hanger or long metal brass bristle brush to clean out the bottom of the pan. if you have a boroscope use it to locate the pickup tube filter and try to clean it. get boiling hot water several gallons, and pour through the dipstick tube. add drops of dishwasher liquid. let it sit for 40 min. you may then do it again.
add kerosene thru dipstick and let sit then drain.
sugar may clog your pickup tube and lead to low oil pressure and knocking, so you want to clear it out this way.
then add oil and change filter etc.

It's really something how people find a really old thread, and feel compelled to register, confirm their registration, and then reply to the thread, without ever noticing it's an eleven year old thread.
