90' Iroc won't start, ECM code "EGR FAILURE"

The car is 5.7 Liter Iroc-z. TPI.

I had replaced the fuel pump and filter about 800 miles back and it has been running beautifully until now.

Last night after driving to the grocery store and back, about 15 minutes after I got back, i remembered to get another thing and hopped back in the car.
It started, idled for about 2 seconds then just died. Car is getting fuel, tank is full, tried carb cleaner in throttle body.

ECM code is coming up 32, or EGR failure.

Engine will crank and crank, and sounds of light "putt putt" coming from exhaust while cranking, just like when I'm starting on any other time.... suggesting compression.

Think it may be plugs?

Will it start and run if you give it about half throttle and hold it? If yes, then EGR could be stuck open. If not, then it's time to start the usual troubleshooting routine. Does it have fuel pressure, spark, timing slip, etc.

No, it wont start at any throttle, wont fire or anything.

I tested for spark and what do you know, no spark. I took a cable off of a spark plug and had a screwdriver in the boot of the cable, then 1/4 inch from a metal ground.

Have you tried replacing your spark control module? (ESC)

I replaced the ESC, and today I tried to start again.

It wouldn't start. So i put a little carb cleaner in the intake and after some cranking it started for a second then went back to cranking.

I think the starter is to blame, last time I was at the mechanic he said it was bad anyway. Would the starter be the culprit in the case of starting for one second, then cranking? Battery is full, newly charged. Cranking sounds like the nice whirr, for a couple seconds, then will just click as if its out of juice, and repeat that.

What about your battery cables?
Check them for stiffness within 6 inches of the terminals, stiffness indicates corrosion between the copper strands.
Still it would have to be a sever cuurent drain to keep the engine from starting.
I'd correct the current drain problem first.

I would check you pickup coil. You may also have an issue with the EGR since you are getting that code. Or possibly a short or something confusing the ECM. Might also check voltage going to the coil.
