Help with Engine

I have a 88 camaro with a 305 v8 5.0 liter TBI engine.
Can i put my heads on a 1978 305 small block.
The reason why i am asking is because my engine died but heads are still good. and a guy is selling a complete 305 engine minus heads for a good price. please help thank you.

Re: Help with Engine

ugh!
You can, but you'd need new pushrods because you'd be using the old 305's cam and lifters.
Good god that would be a sluggish vehicle though.
Please, just buy a 350 shortblock and use that.

Re: Help with Engine

If you are deadset on using the old 305, a few things to consider. I would probably change the cam. It may or may not realize more compression with your heads than it did stock, but it will probably get more flow (maybe). Either way I would still change the cam, just about anything reasonable that you could purchase for it would be better than what will be in it. Its already stripped down anyway, replace it and the lifters.

You may have starter/flywheel issues. Your 88 has a one piece rear main seal, the older one will have a two piece. If you use the flexplate from the engine you buy, you may or may not need a new starter.

Buy good gaskets the first time, trust me. And dont put chrome any where you dont want leaks.
