i have a stock rearend drum brakes on an 84 camaro. i just bought a posi disk rearend today, what all is needed to get this baby hooked up? i was told it was out of an 88 iroc. will it bolt right up, and will i have to run new lines? thanks guys
I did this swap 10 years ago. It will bolt right in. Change the brake flex lines and switch to disc prop valve. You will need new e-brake cables. You didn't say if the new rear is 9 or 10 bolt or if discs are PBR or not. I'm not sure if you could use PBR's with 15" wheels if that is still what you have on your '84.The clearance is close on 16" IROC wheels.

im gna go look at it today im not sure if its 9 or 10 bolt. whats pbr? i hope itll work with 15s i just bought new wheels
PBR's are the aluminum calipers. I'm not sure if all of them have the same dia. discs but I know mine are close. Pull a wheel off of the car and mount it on the new rear for a quick check. Good luck.
thanks also where do i put the proportion valve at? he said it has all the lines on the rearend do i just tie them into the valves or what? i dont know anything on rearends
The Prop. valve is located by the master cylinder. It is different for discs or drums. You could get the one from the car that the rear came out of if it is available. Also while you have your brake system open I would reccomend changing the flex lines to the front calipers. They tend to be a problem after a while.
ive got the 4th gen rear end i just put all new brakes on it pbr's i and my 15"s fit fine realy close but fine

i already have fixed the flex lines they sucked before i got new rearend. so is there a diagram or something showing how i run all my lines or is it pretty self explanitory
The brake lines are pretty self explanitory. I guess the e-brake cables are hard to come by for some set-ups. I got mine from GM dealer but that was 10 years ago. GM prop valve bolts in just as the old one did. Does the new rear have the hard lines on it yet?
i wouldnt think so unless the brakes are bigger on the 88 compared to the 97 i wouldnt think so

The proportioning valve regulates how much pressure goes to the rear brakes. From what I've been told rear drums require more pressure than discs do so your old valve could cause the rears to lock up before the fronts. Not a good situation. As with any brake changes be very careful with your first road test. First , with the car safely on jack stands , spin the tires and apply the brakes to make sure the rears are working. Then road test at slow speed in a safe place. Try hard braking to see if the rears will lock too early. A gravel road or parking lot will show this at slower speed than asphalt. Remember, the brakes are probably the most important safety feature on your car.
also do i need the prop valve? cant i just use the stock setup?
Sometimes you can sometimes you can't. On my '91 I have an 87 9bolt with discs and the drum prop valve wasn't stopping them very well, and I found it hard to locate a disc prop valve so I just bout the Wilwood adjustable one from summit for like 50 and that solved my problem. I have also heard of people just throwing the rear end up, connecting the brake lines and they are good to go. I didn't check to see if you were running an auto or a stick shift, but if you are running auto I wouldn't be in any hurry to get the parking cables, they are just as easy to install after the rear end swap as during. On the non-PBR (I don't know about the PBRs) its easy to go to each caliper and actuate the parking brake mechanism to adjust the brakes.
can i run a differtn year rotor or caliper? or does it gotta be the same? my calipers are coming back as being on a 90 camaro. 90s have posi disk rears?

89-92 run the same size rotor and caliper. Some rears will have limited slip, some won't.

Good question, as they look well spent. Should you use them as cores, I'd keep the e-bracket and springs.

can i just leave the e brake bracket and stuff off? i dont need em. i was thinking they were rough but the rubber around piston looks decentand the cylinder is still shiny chromish.... so dunno if i should use em or buy new
