The metal divider helps the air make the turn, leave it the way you found it. Your SLP cAI is a speed mod, well, so is relocating the battery to the rear of the car, like, in that well behind the left rear tire, opposite the spare tire behind the right rear tire. Summit Racing and Jegs both sell a couple of good kits to do this.

It's the battery, or the smog device or the CAI. You can't have it all. Moving the battery is neat and easy, and helps performance. The kits are high quality, safe, and low cost.
I have the SLP CAI and the canister is shoved in by the battery. Mine is at a friend's shop right now and this is the only picture I have. If you look at the right of the picture you can see the top of the canister to the left of the battery.
My charcoal canister fits and I have the same year car that you do. Also a bigger aftermarket radiator. For a look see look in this thread and scroll down to reply #21 and the left picture.
