i have some nice 462 heads and i was wondering if anyone knew if i could drill and tap accessory holes in these? i was told if i do the holes will hit the water jackets or something. Does anyone have any insight on this please?
A good machine shop can do it for you. I have also seen people try it their self which I would caution you against unless you have access to a horizontal mill and some good measuring equipment.
Only if they have a flat machined surface where you need to drill the holes. If just an angled cast surface, there isn't enough material to drill and tap.
The heads are worth more to someone who is looking for restoration heads than to someone looking for performance. Don't ruin them by drilling them.
I have to respectfuly disagree. All it takes is a small spotface, just deep enough to clean up all the way around. after that it is just a well measured drill and tap. yes you do run the risk of getting into the water jacket beacuse of inconsistincy in the casting process, but that is really not that big of a deal. Just use a little loctite on your bolt and you will be fine.
i had a set of thoes same heads great heads btw but the shop wouldnt drill the hols for thr same reson 57kid said no boss to make the threads strong and i went ahead and ran my alt and power steering on diff brackets the steering you have to get an aftermarket unit but its nice i got mine from dirt track racers for $100 for everything i needed.but yea dont runie thoes heads you can get around drilling
man that sucks, because its the only pair of heads i have right now, and all i need to finish my engine is an intake manifold and it would be complete. well that and the accessories obviously. how much do you guys think these are worth they have screw in studs a valve job etc. allready.
you could get the block mount pow ster pump used for probly the same price as it would cost to have them drilled but i know what you mean if you can get a shop to do it and really want it go for ir but you know the risk lol
