Should you be unsure when the last change was, time has come to service it. Drop the cover (which will drain the oil). Clean the housing and diff cover of RTV and/or gasket remains. Button up with a new bead of RTV or a new gasket. Fill up--the fill plug is located on the top pass side of the pumkin). For type of fluid and amount, check the following link:

this is helpful thanks.
I have no idea when the last change was, I have had the car for 2 years and I doubt the previous owner changed it so I do believe the time has come to change it.

time to change . when cover is off , clean inside . i normally use mineral spirits in a squirt can or spray bottle , then blow out with compressed air . might want to think about a good synthetic gear lube . i like mobil 1 75w90 . good luck .

i read somewhere (can't remember where) that once that cover is off its difficult to put back on, especially if its never been changed before. It is possible that it never been changed. what problems may I find?

If all is cleaned well, I can't imagine there'd be a problem--at least I've never experienced one.
