Newbie, Mods?

Hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong place...

I recently bought an 88 Trans Am GTA. I was wondering where to start with engine mods? The car already has shortie SLP headers and a aftermarket thermostat. It also has a descent sounding muffler. Are there any good CAI kits or cat-back exhaust systems? Thanks for any help.

Re: Newbie, Mods?

Flowtech Afterburner on mine and I really like it. Much cheaper that Magnaflow or Flowmaster. Made by Holley.

Best thing I ever did to mine was put a Hypertech fan switch. Turns the cooling fans on earlier and runs much cooler. I hated watching the temp gauge.

Other cheap mods include:
Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, Throttle body coolant by-pass, headers, adjustment of the TPS Sensor, Mallory digital ignition

Re: Newbie, Mods?

since you probaly have a 165 stat in there you should get the fan swich by hypertech first so the car will run properly, well much cooler and you wont have to watch the guage fluctuate. it really all depends on your budget. i would not get msd yet its too expensive for very little gain if any. i would get a afpr and air foil. i bought them together and noticed a pretty nice gain

Re: Newbie, Mods?

What are the AFPR and air foil for? Are there any air intake kits for this car?

Re: Newbie, Mods?

yea there are cold air intakes. air foil say adds like 8 hp idk how true that is but its cheap and afpr is adjustable fuel pressure regulator. you raise you psi at the rail and gain a few horses definitly noticable up top

i go ebay because like most camaro owners im poor. do a search on tpi siamesed runners are good but you have to, well would be best off if you also ported the plenum for a set of those. and as far as cai for a bird idk i have an iroc and love the factory setup as far as look im currently modifying it to the grill like a ram air o and to answer your ? yes they say like 20hp i dont thing that much but youll definitly feel it

Re: Newbie, Mods?

They still make the SLP CAI kit for the TA...you can order it from Summit. Before I spent the $'s on siamesed runners, I'd put a set of headers on.
Guaranteed HP with those. I have no experience with the airfoil...it is supposed to smooth the air entering the plenum, but I dunno....you can find them on eBay pretty cheap.
