Starter Problem...strange noise

I've got a carbed, no computer 350 that's having a strange starter issue. I went to start the car and the starter makes this loud, fast noise almost like an electric fan that's at full blast. The noise won't stop if i remove the key from the ignition and I had to disconnect the battery to stop it. The noise starts the instant I re-connect the battery and the engine does not crank. The engine and the starter both have 3500 miles on them. Any ideas...I'm completely stumped.

Thanks

Most likely the solenoid is sticking keeping the starter motor running even when it's not engaged with the flywheel. Try smacking it with the handle of the screwdriver. Might be time for a rebuilt starter, or you can try just replacing the solenoid. The solenoid is the thing the positive battery cable attaches to.
