hei distributor no spark

hey i have a 1986 camaro and i rebuilt the engine....i just got rid of the old distributor and put a vaccum Hei one in it cranks but doesn't fire up. There is no spark and i connected the wire from the "batt" symbol on the distriubtor cap to the actual battery and it still wont spark i was wondering if its because of the computer chip or something else..... if anyone knows how to fix this i would appreciate it

Re: hei distributor no spark

Rotor inside the cap?

Rotor spinning around when the engine cranks?

Module plug plugged into the cap?

Distributor dropped into the engine so the rotor is pointed to the #1 plug wire when #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke?

I could go on with more suggestions but with little information, I can't say why it won't spark.

The large cap HEI is a very simplistic ignition system. Drop it into the engine properly and hook up a switched battery source is all it takes.

Re: hei distributor no spark

It's not a computer controlled HEI is it? There no other connector on it?

Is the #1 TDC on the compression stroke or exhaust stroke? You could be out 180*

The 12v power wire goes to the red wire of the coil. Does the coil have red/white or red/yellow wires?

If everything checks out OK, you may have a bad module.

Re: hei distributor no spark

Without physically working on it, I've given you all the basics. You just need to apply 12 volts to the distributor and it should work if everything is hooked up and the distributor is installed correctly.

Did you put the rotor button back in under the coil when you replaced it? Under the cap in the center will be a little carbon button that the rotor rides against.

It it still doesn't work, try a different module or try a different distributor.
