What's the best engine/oil additive for a high mileage (282,000 kms, 175,000 Mi) engine (5.7lt TPI). I'm rapidly approaching the need to get this thing smog tested. I have noticed a lil' smoke when it's cold but the car has been sitting for at least 3 years. So far I've gotten half a tank of high test through it. I'd like to get at least one more with some injector cleaner etc. in the fuel. I've read all the threads on e-Tests etc. so I might try some of those tricks if it fails the first time.
I've seen things like Slik50, STP, Lucas, Wynns etc. What have you had success with?

Seafoam Is godly when it comes to cleaning up the valvetrain/injectors/carbs w/e
Seafoam can be purchased at just about any local auto parts store. Just follow the directions on the can and bam
engine restore works...i use it every oil change. it only works while its in the oil so if you want to keep seeing the results, you'll have to use it every oil change.
seafoam is great too. i use it all the time. not just on my car, but my whole family's cars and my friend's cars too.

the general idea is that if you add it to the oil, it cleans out engine gunk that is collected in the engine.
the problem is when you actually have a good amount of gunk, the seafoam dislodges it, then it clogs the oil passages.
its better to use good oil, and use seafoam regularly throughout the life of the engine.
personally, i have had much better luck with seafoam as a fuel system cleaner.
i had a 84 caprice classic before my camaro, and that thing just LOVED being out of tune and i swear that every time i poured a bottle of seafoam down the carb, i got another 10 hp back... of course i would loose it after about 3-5 weeks of driving, but it worked great at cleaning out the carb and de carboning the cylinders.
Yah, and if you use it as an oil additive on a higher mileage motor (what i have found to work best) is run it for 300-500 miles then change the oil, use either cheapy oil or the old oil pull the filter/plug (obviously put a drain pan down) and recycle the oil (just run it through to drain) most of the time it works for getting most of the disloged gunk that would get to the filter, and if you're oil pressure is fine when you put the new filter + oil in said 'gunk' that had been disloged will be in the filter.
Throwin it down the carb works absolutely amazing for carbon/'gunk' build up...
I pulled the valve cover on my corolla at 67k to change back to a stock gasket and using it religiously every 10k or so on the valve train you can still see a silver color :P and its power has never diminished.
After some more research, your comments here and talkin' to a few knowledgeable fella's I went with the Seafoam for the fuel and Restore for the oil. Once I can get a temp tag I'll get some mileage on it and change the oil again before the smog test. I'll report results when they're in. Standby.....
That engine is barly broken in,my 91 has 254k on it and it runs fine.
The smoke that you see is most likly from the valve guides,my 305 started puffing a little at start up around the same mialge.Seafoam is the best,it'll clean the fuel system,upper valve train and every thing.Hears what you do,put a 1/3 of a can in the gas tank,1/3 in the oil and suck the remaining 1/3 up a vacuum line.When you suck it in the vacuum line it will smoke like hell for a few minutes(white smoke,you tube it,you'll see what I'm talking about)and try to die,dont let it.Use a dixie cup to suck it up into the line,dont just drop the line all the way into it,it will die.Do not drive much with the seafoam in the oil,I drove maybe 40 miles on a fresh oil change and my oil went from golden Mobile 5000(in my old pathfidner) to coal black in 40 miles and the filter weighed a ton.But it never ran better,but it also leaked oil worse after that since the sludge/carbon was blocking a leaky mainseal.
