hey guys im just starting to get the drag racing itch and i was wondering what all is needed to reach a 12 second car. i have bought a few things to get me started but i need to know how to make them better or what is better.
items i have so far:
-350 block out of a 88 suburban currently in car
-posi rearend out of a 1990 iroc-disc brakes. not sure the gearing. prob 3:23
-heads. dart iron eagle ss heads
-wanna purchase a voodoo cam but not sure of which specs to get.
-already have a 100 shot of n.o.s.
There is no rocket science involved in getting a 12 sec timeslip nowadays.
If you already have a 350 block, I would be replacing the pistons to bring the compression up to around 9.5:1, 10:1 would be better again.
Pick a nice cam - something around 230deg, .520" lift and 110LSA will give you all the power necessary, as well as giving you a nice fat lumpy idle.
The Iron Eagle s/s heads - they have a 165cc intake runner don't they? Not sure that will flow enough, but you can give it a shot - around 200cc intake would be better.
A suitable intake (assuming that the car is carby, not EFI) - Edelbrock Performer RPM or similar and 650 carb should do the trick.
The net result should be around 400hp, maybe a little more, and you should be running in the 12s comfortably (without the need for the nitrous) depending on what tyres you use.
If you are using the nitrous, you could get away with a smaller cam - say 222deg, .480" lift, and the 165cc heads might be ok.
ya the heads are 165 cc. couldnt i get them ported to 200cc?
Maybe, but the fact that Dart never offered a 200cc version of the Iron Eagle S/S head leads me to doubt it. Probably best to talk to a head porting specialist to see how far they can go.
You might be better off selling them and buying a set of Iron Eagle Platinums or something similar which have the 200cc runner standard.
You could give the 165cc heads a try and see how it goes, but I imagine that they will start to cause a restriction as you get close to 400hp.
