i have a 1984 camaro z28,i am trying to set the base timing,but i cant find the est connector.i had other people say its a brown wire,black strip,located behind brake booster,passenger side firewall,i even heard its a 4 wire connector.i m having no luck finding it.i just set the timing without unhooking anything,to 10 degrees btdc.would that be about right?

It comes out the passenger side fender, open up your wire loom and find it, it should be the only one inside the loom with a connector (Yes brown and black striped wire). Mine stuck out from the loom, that's how I found mine.

Some sit right on the AC Box against the firewall, some sit clockwise around the strut tower, some sit flush with the fender line. Those are all the places I have seen them, never by the brake booster though....and never a 4 wire connector.

Maybe years factor in this? I know for a fact though my buddies 85 TA, my brothers 86 berlinetta, my other buddies 87 maro and my 89 maro all had it in the exact same spot.

On an '84 you disconnect the 4-wire computer connector at the distributor. The timing set directions are on the emissions decal on the radiator support. Base timing should be 6 degrees BTDC.

i disconnected the 4 wire connector at the base of distributer and set the timing,pluged 4 wire connector back in,checked the timing again,and the mark is at the same place?when i connected the 4 wire connector after setting the base timing the timing shoud be around 20 degrees btdc right?

found the connector coming out of distibutor,set my base timing,pluged est back in,then checked timing with est connected,the timing is still at the same spot,that is not right,right?

i set the timing the way it says but when im all done after pluging the est connector back in the timing mark is still at the same spot.with the est pluged back in shoudnt the mark be further advanced?

good question. . Try this, highlight and copy the hyperlink and post it in other forums such as electronics and TPI sections.
