Distributor Education

I have an extra distributor out of an '87 Z that I would like to rebuild, and eventually use in my '85. I got it apart, and I am not sure on what things are usually replaced in a rebuild? What parts wear out? I know that pick up coil is the part with the electrical connector on it, and it seems to be toast. I read a thread on the V6 board about polishing the shaft? How easy is it to replace the two bearings in the housing? How do they come out? I have already start to clean the copper parts since they were heavily corroded. Probably the part I am least sure of is the disc that seems to be pressed in on the shaft where there are spines. There are rubber pieces that look kind of dry rotted. What is is part, and is it easy to find a new one and replace it? Probably more importantly, is it important to replace it.

Any insight into any of this would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Distributor Education

I can tell you what I did...I replaced the pickup, and the module. I also took the shaft and cleaned it up good on a wire wheel on a bench grinder. Also ran carb cleaner down the distributer to cleaned it out good, oiled the shaft and put it all back together. Thats what I did anyway!!

Re: Distributor Education

What is the order things go back together? It seems like there is a bunch more end play now. I must have put it together wrong.
