Have a sbc i believe is a 305 looked up the casting number 14010203 Here. junkyard said it was a 350 when i bought it
anyway I bought a new starter, v8 motor mounts, and new rings today. when I manually turn the flywheel and look in the cylinder walls you can see oil coming from where the rings are and on the cylinder walls. I know generally how to do this, undo the rod from the crank shaft, push it out, put the new rings on with a compressor, then stick it back in. but is there any order the rings should go in ? The box if rings I got has 4-5x as much as i need all different shapes. the black ones do not fit in the cylinder wall without compression which is good im guessing....but the others slide right in with room to spare. do i need bigger rings ? never installed rings before so i'm sort of at a loss as to what to do.
I will try to post this again . Dont want to sound like smart alek but you can buy a haynes manual it will give you the information you need how to measure bore size and what ring goes where.I think the bore size on a 305 is smaller than a 350 which is 4.00 inches. Hope this helps.
how smooth are the cylinder walls can you see any crosshatch pattern? might just need a ball hone not the 3 springloaded stones it could work without the hone just more risky
the rings should be labeled with dots or some type of marking if there is a top side to the ring
there are 5 rings per piston here 3 for the oil control set and 2 compression rings you will need a set of piston ring endgap specs from either the ring set the ring manufacturer or the stock specs
the compression rings will be thicker than any other single ring and flat
place each of the compression rings one at a time into the bore you intend to use the ring in square it up using a piston placed into the bore upside down now remove the piston and use a feeler gauge to determine the distance between the ring ends
file as needed check this measurement in several hieghts in that bore repeat for all compression ring in all matching the rings to the cylinder
once that is done you need to make sure there isnt some type of marking for top and botom of the rings
then place the thinnest ring into the very bottom groove closest to the wrist pin next you will need to place the "corrogated" ring in the same groove then another of the very thin rings those are the oil control rings next the compression rings depending on the set and even ring thickness will determine which goes where generally they have instructions with them just need to look hard
then just before i put the ring compressor on you will need to stagger the end gaps if you have the manual there is a diagram or some searching of the internet will provide you with one
make sure to tape up the rod bolts or put some rubber hose on them you dont want to nick the journals when you are tapping the piston in
Look on the back left ledge of the block. You should see 5.0L or 5.7L. That'll tell what block it was/is.
Make sure you bought the right rings for that block.
