external coil to traditional HEI swap?

i have an 87 LG4 based car and my freind gave me an accell super coil and cap and rotor from a 1985 tpi car he just sold, the coil is rated around 50000volts so i know it has to be a little stronger then my stock one. Would there be any benefit to switching to this? i think i would need the whole distributor. I would actually like to know if this is possible and does it hook up with the old wiring harness and everything, would this be more trouble then the results would be worth? thanks in advance... oh yeah i did a search for the topic and netted nothing

ya i think you do need the whole distributor because the cap wont bolt up to the dizzy rite? if it does then your golden. you might need a insulator and button resistor (located under the coil in the cap).

depends on the color of the wires from the coil.IIRC there is one with yellow and white wires and another with red and white wires

Re: external coil to traditional HEI swap?

Don't waste ur time, The remote coil setup is better. u can pick up a decent coil for under 50 bucks for it. With the older unit u would need the whole dizzy and u would need to modify the harness which is more pain then its worth. beside stock the coils still produce good voltage, sometimes well over 40000 volts. Accel has cap, rotor, coil and modules for ur current dizzy u should be able to get all for under 100 and have a nice ignition upgrade. Although if ur stock or pretty close to stock then ignition upgrades like that won't do anything for u maybe increase fuel mileage a bit but thats all.

The stock ignition has more than enough juice if it's in good condition. All you need are enough volts to jump a tiny .035" gap under 10 atmospheres of pressure. This does not require 50,000 volts, or even 30,000 volts.

I mean you might see an advantage if you are running forced induction, but you should really be shortening your gap in that situation.
