I am building a 383 stroker for my camaro and I am trying to decide what cam to go with.It has edelbrock performer rpm aluminum heads,edelbrock performer intake as well.Compression ratio will be about 9.5:1.Transmission is a rebuilt 700r4 with a very firm shift kit and has stock 3.23 gears in the rear.I will probably be hooking A/C back up to it too seeing as I live in florida.I would like to get away with using the stock torque converter also cause I am running low on money.I was thinking a comp xe268,somebody suggested a crane 284 to me but I am not sure if I could use the stock converter with it.Basically I want something I can drive daily with A/C but still want to be putting out somewhere around 420hp.

IMHO save money for a good torque converter, get the cam that best matches your heads, and you will be alot happier, 420whp will come alot easier to you with some good duration
The cam Attila suggested would probably work out quite well. Due to the shorter duration, you should be able to use the stock converter without any issues. You will have to get some work done on your heads to accommodate the higher lift though. Definitely better valve springs and probably have the top of the valve guides machined down to make sure the valve spring retainers don't hit the top of the guide boss. Comp 987-16 springs would probably handle the lift of that cam. They're bigger diameter than stock springs, so you'd have to get the spring seats cut larger along with the guide machining. While you're there, might as well have the guides machined for positive type seals too.

no, those heads already come able to accept 1.44"-dia. springs, and able to accept the lift, so no machining necessary. Cams that are labelled as being for EFI tend to have a good idle, work well with stock gearing and stock torque converters, and drive nicely, both in traffic and on the highway. This is the mellowest cam that'll get you to your HP goal with the stuff you already have. It's mellow, for the moderate duration and lobe separation. But the lobes are agressive, and will really fill the cylinders, despite the duration. I've seen 415 HP from a near-identical build, only iy had the RPM AirGap intake and a Holley HP-series 750 carb.
Thats a pretty big cam for the street. you will be eating gas like crazy. check out the comp xr270. it has a powerband of 1600-5400 and it works well with the performer rpm, and its just slightly bigger than the xr268. I have that cam in my vortec 350 and i have gobs of low end torque. I started out with a stock torque converter and it worked fine, didnt stall or stumble at a 700 rpm idle in gear. I then upgraded with a 2200 stall and im pulling 2.0 60s with 2.73 gears, which is impressive.
