Possibly Wires burning or burnoff from before

Thank you all for the tips and help. Now I got the leaks fixed and no oil anywhere, but a new problem has arose. I started up my bird an let it idle to check for leaks and everything after about 15 minutes or so, I began to get smoke that smells hot almost like plastic burning or melting from the rear of my engine near the distributor and below it. The smoke was coming from below my exhaust manifolds and rising through the areas around the plug wires. My exhaust manifolds are original and the PO has removed 90% of the air components.

Is the Dip Stick seated firmly? I've seen oil escape there and cause smoke once it hit the manifold.

Well, I went out and checked the starter wire as you said and it was on the front pipe and yes some of the insulation had melted to the exhaust manifold. I have repaired it and I am now taking all the plug wires off one at a time (I have already learned the game of figure out where they go from my younger years), so I can clean the boots and stuff as well as inspect for melting and/or burnt oil. So hopefully this will solve the smoking problem, the next phase will be carb rebuild and float replacement, which I have done several times on a rochester quadrajet so this two bbl should be a snap.

Re: Possibly Wires burning or burnoff from before

Ok,
Well I found that the starter wire going from the batt was burned more than expected. I took solder and made sure all the copper wires that were left made contact and everything, then heat shrinked it and wrapped with elect. tape just to be sure of a good insulating area. Now I put the battery in and after i connected the pos cable to the batt i went to hook the neg up and got a small spark. Now both cables are on and it wont even turn over, I got the idiot lights lighting and the seatbelt buzzer as well, but when i turn to crank it nothing and everythng shuts down. I am thinking I need to replace that batt cable, but does anyone have any ideas on this? Also the car will start if I get jumped, did it fine on friday. Tested batt at Oreilly's and it had an 84% charge and the batt was good, had it charged as well.
