Hey guys i pulled the 5.7 from my 90 IROC a few years back for a built 406. I stored it because it ran great. Had around 80,000 miles on it. Well i pulled the intake at one time and water got into one of the bores. I didnt know it until recently when i pulled the heads off. I want to use it in a 56 belair im restoring. So i was going to hone the bores and install new rings and bearings. IM worried about the pitting there is no ridge in the bores. Like i said the motor ran great. I wanted to make this a low budget build. Its just going to be a weekend cruiser not a track car.
I sprayed pb blaster in the bore and used 1000 grit paper to free it. The motor spins freely and i was careful when turning it over. So i dont think i did any more damage. Do you guys think i will be ok as is or with a hone and new rings? I hate to get into boring the block if i dont need to.
My plan was to just install a new gasket set. Not touch the short block. Port the stock heads and get a 3 angle valve job upgrade the springs. Install a ZZ4 cam, put on a Performer EPS intake with matching carb. IM even using the stock manifolds. I just wanted a torquey fun to drive sb for the 56. But i found the pitting so im on the fence about what to do now.

I understand your feelings, I've been there more than once. But as a professional automotive machinist for nearly 10 years now, I ytell you that that block must be bored. Sorry.
Hi thanks for your professional opinion, not what i wanted to hear though. What would happen if i honed it and installed new rings? Can you break it down in laymans terms? I will bore it if i have to.
It'll chew up the rings and the piston skirts, you'll have lots of blow-by, and it'll be difficult to get a smooth idle. If you want that block, instead of $100 for another one, you can spend that $100 having that cylinder bored and sleeved and honed. Most guys have bad opinions about sleeves, but it's perfect for this block in this proposed application. If this block is pre-87, don't spend $ on it. You can find good '87-up blocks and have the advantages of roller lifters.
Thanks for the advise...problem solved. I stripped the block and honed the bore. It came out with no problem was mostly on the surface. looked worse the pics then it was. Im installing new rings and bearings. Should make for a fun sb.
