350TPI Starting problem

I’ve just bought 1992 Z28 with a 350TPI and 700R4 transmission. When I go to first start the car with the shifter in “Park” I turn the key, the dash lights come on and I just get a “clonk” sound and the engine doesn’t turn over. I found that taking the shifter out of park, in to neutral and then back into park the car starts fine? The battery is almost brand new and the car always starts, either first time or after I’ve taken it out of park worked the shifter back and forth.

Ideas please? I don’t think it’s the starter because the car has only done 35,000km!

Re: 350TPI Starting problem

Sounds like the switch on the side of the shifter that allows it to start in park or neutral only.

Take the console apart, you will see the switch on the side of the shifter body. It has large purple wires running into it.
