92 rs v8 5-speed column swap??

Hey all,I have ran into a problem with my steering column.
I have a 92 rs v8 5-speed with cruise control.
well my ignition switch broke and when we took apart the column is really in bad shape.
Someone had just thrown a bunch of stuff together.

I need to know what other columns I can use in my car without running into any problems?
I want a column I can put in and go.
Is there any other column that will work without any mods?
I really want to cruise in my 5-speed badly.

Thanks for any and all advice,
JDRACING

Re: 92 rs v8 5-speed column swap??

I think you can put and 82 to 92 steering wheel columns on without no problem.
I had a 92 camaro which I took off the column and put it on my 84 camaro. The only thing I had to do was to get the connector that hook up to the column on my 92 and connect it with my connector on my 84 camaro which I strip off some wire and connected it together.
I never had any problems at all

Re: 92 rs v8 5-speed column swap??

Not sure how that will affect VATS though. You may want to look into bypassing VATS. If you do that Im pretty sure any column will work. If you dont... you need to get a column from a VATS car, but I think it would work if you plugged everything back together right. But that's assuming you move over your ignition switch. You said yours broke, so you need a new switch.

Most likely you'll get a nwe column and its own ignition switch and a new key, and the VATS pellet wont match.... So you're kinda screwed.

Just bypass the VATS and be done with it. It's very easy.

That should clear it up a lot for ya.

The wires leading to the module are orange and some other color. I think it's purple but the picture I have from when I did it isnt very clear. But look for an orange wire coming from the column.

Re: 92 rs v8 5-speed column swap??

ok,i found an 89 column with tilt, and cruise just like my car.
only diffrence is my car is manual tranny, and column is from an auto.
is that going to matter?
and the parts stores, and junk yards say that it has to be a 90-92 column to work.
i do know about the vats,so you think it will fit right up if i override the vats?
even though it is an 89 column from an automatic car?

i am also gonna have to use my key part of switch. is that gonna work in 89 column?
i need to know before i pay the man to pull the column.
thanks guys, you been a great help.

is that 92 above a 5-speed,or automatic?
i like it,that is the color of my 84 z28 looks like.
