Possible big crankshaft problem...asking bunch of peoples advice. - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

heh, fun.... The crank shaft in my motor, where the harmonic mounts up is stripped. Talking about the bolt hole where you screw in the bolt that holds on the harmonic balancer and pulley itself. I would try taping it to the same size but the threads are torn from the shaft. I can stick my finger in and its like pressing a spring. I think the whole thread is like this( can't remember so i'm going to check tomorrow). Assuming the worst tho i'm considering my options. So just assuming the threads are trash what would be a decent way to fix this. I was going to try a heli coil (however you spell it). Think thats strong enough? Or should I tap it to the next size up.

Once I found out it was stripped I decided to walk away for a while,lol. So after a 3 day break my minds back on it. Everyone has treated this like its really bad tho so I wanted to ask some people before I carried on with repairs...

First I'd try a 1/2" longer bolt. If that didn't work, I'd get a tap (7/16" FT I think) and tap it a little deeper and use a longer bolt. It only keeps the balancer from wobbling. GM didn't even use a bolt for a number of years. A helicoil would be fine too. You probably tried turning the engine over with it. That's how most people do it.
