Ok, i have a 1987 camaro iroc z with a 305 tpi. The car runs fine, but if i really get on it, it will shut off. Ive got it up to 90, then when i stop it shuts off. And if i wot it for a second and then stop it shuts off. idk what it is, but its really annoying. thx
ok, just today, i went out and started the car to warm it up before i leave for school. i went out there after 5 minutes of starting, and it was off. i dont know what the problem is, im thinking it might be something with the throttle body.
well, i just went out and took it apart and cleaned everything. the maf screen was black and full of stuff, but everything seemed fine. so i put it back together and started. it seemed better but idled at 1000 rpm. it sat for like 3 minutes and still was at 1000 rpm. what would cause that?

It probably has really funny programming that it learned from your plugged up MAF. You should drive it around for a few miles and leave it running for awhile afterwards, then turn it off and set the idle speed. Search for "idle speed adjustment" and you'll find alot of how-to articles on here about how to do that.
ok, the idle is fine now and is way better than before, but now everytime i start it, the check engine soon light comes on. and only stays on for about a minute then shuts off, what would cause this?
Hey man, have you ran a code reader on your car yet? If you dont have one use a paperclip and insert it in the A and B terminals of your diagnostic port (should be under your dash and above your brake pedal). Sounds to me like a bad Throttle position sensor. Also, could be a bad ignition control module. Also test your fuel injectors. Make sure you use an ohmeter or a mulitmeter. Make sure you set the multimeter to ohms and to 2K. your injectors should be between 0.013 and 0.020 ohms. Anything drastically different from those figures signals a bad injector. Really though, your problem sounds more of a bad TPS or ignition control module. Don't forget the basics though like your dist cap, plugs, wires, fuel filter. Any vacum leaks on your car? Check the brake booster vacum connection on the back of the plenum also.
I'm thinking bad IAC or TPS. Those are you two main idle killers if it runs well otherwise.
Do the paperclip thing and dig out the codes (there's an article in the Tech Articles section of the board how to do it). ECM saves the codes from about the last 25 restarts so your intermittent check engine light code should still be in memory. Would be a good place to start.
