i have a 92 camaro Z28 5.7 TPI and i keep going threw fuel pumps left and right . Car runs great then it breaks down then i put a new fuel pump in it runs great for a few months then gives out again . Does anyone have this problem ? Would it be better to get rid of the in tank pump and install an external fuel pump ? any help would be great >
Sounds like a wiring issue, or the ECM is causing it.
ECM? How can it be the ECM, look at the schematic you'll see the Tan/White wire going to the FP also goes to the ECM.
If the ECM already controls the FP relay why does it need to the control the FP? It maybe that the FP control circuit isn't functioning as it should. Other than that, some FP wiring maybe drawing more current than it should and killing the FP, I can't think of anything else as I doubt all the FPs you've used were defective.
At the moment I don't know if the ECM control is for increasing/decreasing the voltage to the FP, maybe some other member can answer the question, but I'm going to look into it.

ECM doesn't "control" the pump other than by turning relay on.The wire to the ECM is so the ECM can monitor the pump voltage because it uses that to fire the injectors when starting.
Key on ,the ECM runs the pump for 2 sec through the relay , then stops .When the ECM sees the oil pressure switch come on line and run the pump while cranking it gives the signal to fire the injectors

Are you running fuel level low and allowing pump to get hot and burn out?
Intank pumps rely on the fuel around them to keep cool
OK, here's the deal. Happens pretty regular in the early 90s GM cars and I'd bet this is your problem here. At the top of the tank, inside the tank itself, there is a plug in connector. This gets corroded some, gets hot, corrodes more, actually gets burnt black sometimes. Loses connection. When you change pumps you move this around enough to get a connection that lasts a while. Have to pull pump, replace connector or the pickup assembly.
yeah, i had that problem.. its autozones pump. . their fuel pumps made me drop the tank like 2 times (not including the first fuel pump swap). I read they fail, and the check valves suck. ive got a a/c delco fuel pump at dealership for 150, but at http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...,parttype,6256 they go for 69 bucks, wholesale for 37 bucks i recommend using the neoprene hose included with the pump
I personally like to use A/C Delco parts, they do cost more at dealer, cheaper online, but I do trust them More then those knock-off Overseas White Box Crap....
ProtoMaster22: The next time you have the tank down, try using dielectric grease on the connecter for the fuel pump, that should help prevent corrosion.
Not to hi jack this thread alittle, but i have a problem getting my tank out and i see you've done it so maybe you could anwser me a question real quick. did you have any trouble with getting the track bar out? i can't get a bolt to budge. tried dw40 + double wench for leverage and still can't get it.

I've disconnected the OP Switch to test that and other than an extended crank the engine starts and runs fine.
The manual actually states "Fuel Pump Control," not Fuel Pump, or Oil Pressure Switch monitor/input.

well i did once buy one from autozone then shortly after bought one from GM because the auto zone ones were not that great it lasted about three weeks then died. so i went to gm and got a new one it lasted . but then i bought a whole new sending unit from napa and then brought a fuel pump from edelbrock witch is a walbro pump.

yes sir you are correct. but that isnt an issue all that is functioning correctly

yes it can be a bit of a pain .try jacking up on the pumpkin of the rear end tell u find a highth that they become lose.
Looks like you've replaced everything back there with quality stuff so the problem has to be somewhere else. Have you replaced the pump control relay by the brake booster? Not a lot of money and easy to replace. Good ground connection back at the tank?

yes sir, i have replaced all three of the relays on the firewall.and yes maybe i just need to be a little better about keeping up the maintance of my fuel system like always have a full tank and change my fuel filter more often and hope that works.
