new here and new to camaros. need A LOT of help

Hey guys,
i just joined the forum and i've just bought my first Camaro today. the car is a 1988 iroc z with a 305, i think, (the previous owner told me 350) with a paxton supercharger (sn2000) on it. it ran ok today (meaning it actually drove) but it definatly has ignition timing issues. i parked it out back and did a simple fluids check and now it won't stay running. i can get it started and keep my foot on the gas and it'll idle until i remove my foot and then it stalls. has this happend to anyone else? where should i even start when looking for the problem?
any help is appreciated,
kevin

the 8th digit in the VIN is E.
could this be a problem with the Throttle position sensor?

and i can't pull codes from the car, it's not new enough for OBD II

Engine code - E - should be the 305TBI which you said, NOT A 305TBI....... Could be the TPS, IAC, ECM, ECT... ECT... If it was a 305TBI, maybe! This engine is outta my league...... looks TPI >> Post there.

good start, check the knock sensor, o2 sensor, timing and of course ur plugs. on a newly purchased car, i always do a tune up, even if they say it was done 2 hours b4 i pick up the car. at least check it all, then you know whats good to keep and what can be replaced.

welcome aboard! That's one heck of a setup to start with in your first 3rd gen. As someone mentioned, that VIN code denotes a 305 TBI motor originally came in the car. However, since you've got a tpi intake on that motor (along with a nice whistle), you may very well have a 350. You should be able to learn a bit more about the motor by running the engine and head casting numbers through www.mortec.com

agreed, mortec.com is the best place to find out exactly what your motor started as.

Re: new here and new to camaros. need A LOT of help

from what you have described-do a compression check. i think that you are hearing knock when you say "ignition timing issues." get a ballpark idea of the basic condition of your motor. remember start with basics.

Re: new here and new to camaros. need A LOT of help

thanks a lot guys, i put a scan tool on it today at school (i retract my previous statement about pulling codes haha) and i pulled 4 of them: coolant sensor (which i had unplugged and is now back in), throttle body heater (i can't remember the exact wording of it), o2 sensor too rich/too lean, and the last one has slipped my mind as of right now. when i had to put the engine code, from the VIN, into the scan tool i had to use "F" which came up as 5.0 TPI and the computer was able to comunicate with the scan tool. my question is can you use a 5.0 tpi computer with a 350 tpi? or do they use the same computer or what? this is my first GM product in a long time so i'm sorry if it seems like i'm asking a lot of simple questions here.
