I bought a 1986 IROC that has not run in four years. The car is all stock. Due to the time it was not driven, I just installed a new GM fuel pump. The car was parked with full tank of gas, so the tank inside was in great shape. I just reinstalled everything, and it will not start. I do not hear any "priming" of the fuel pump as well. There is a "click " sound near the booster when I turn the ignition to on. I was able to get the car to run when spraying starter fluid into the throttle body. What should I test next?
just to make sure that the click you hear is translating to power to the fuel pump, you need a 12v test light and probe the harness at the tank. you can probe the wiring at the relay too, although it wont verify +12v at the pump. see if you are getting voltage to the pump. you can use a dvm to test as well.

there is a relay on the drivers side firewall closest to the firewall unplug it and take a wire with 2 male connectors on it. plug one end into the grey wire and one to the orange. as soon as this happens your fuel pump should kick on if not there could be a wiring problem from the relay to the tank. also check the inline fuse on the passenger side near the battery.
I'd change the plugs, too, and check the wires for cracking and replace them if needed. This isn't why it won't start, but it'll help, once you get it started. Put some Castrol GTX in that oil pan, too. Good luck getting it started. Let us know if you get it running.

I just checked the connector at the replay you mentioned. Looks like there are 2 wires next to each other that are oragish in color. The outer orange wire is thicker then the inner orange wire next to it. Which one are you referring to? Thanks for the help!!

it doesnt necessarily have to be the orange wire just take one male end to the grey wire and touch other to the positive terminal on the battery. putting 12v to the grey wire will kick the fuel pump on
Hey Quick90RS, would you believe that the inline fuse by the battery was my problem?? I checked it, and the 20 amp fuse was blown. Is this the correct size fuse? I looked in the owners manual, and I did not see it mentioned in the fuse section. I then popped in a new one, and she started after a few cranks. 4 years later, and the car is running again! Thanks for the help!
yes 20 amp is the correct size and im happy i could help, also the manual does not mention this fuse at all it should though my repair manual didn"t even mention it
