hi hope someone can help i have since bought a 1982 camaro 2.8 carb model the person before had left it for dead the problem i have is it will turn over maybe about six times then it starts to backfire through the exhaust i noticed that the distributor was 180 degrees out so i set it up top dead center and replaced the distributor back in now the backfire is coming up through the carb i have checked the firing order and the set up of the leads please help john

are you sure you set the timing correctly?

Either your firing order is off, or you've got a bad plug, or bad plug wire.

Leave the distributor where it is, make sure again #1 cylinder is TDC on compression stroke, the take dist cap off - wherever rotor points, that is NOW your #1 plug wire - make sure that wire runs to #1 cylinder - then follow the firing order.

Also, check each plug and make sure they are firing.

Also, check each plug wire, one at a time, for continuity with a volt/ohm meter - there should be very very little resistance on any of them. Even if they are new wires, check them - can't tell you how many bad "new out of the box" wires I've bought over the years.
