Camshaft selection

I know everybody on here gets upset about buildup questions, such as camshaft selection, heads, etc. My question is what is the maximum cam I can apply to my setup.....

About a year ago I went through my engine from top to bottom; Originally an aluminum headed L98, replaced bottom end with hypereutectic pistons, forged rods, cast crank and a cam from Crower, 204/213 @.050 with .485in/.506ex lift with 1.5 rockers. Block was decked, align honed, etc, but kept at original bore specs (4.000).

The original 113's were gone through, rebuilt with stiffer springs (how stiff I don't know, they were from Crower, I'll ask my builder), ported, bowl blended, milled and decked, and port-matched to my TPI intake, which was also ported as much as I could. Heads still use the original valves.

The motor runs great! With the EBL Flash, no problems there. It pulls like and elephant just like it should......

But I need more power. I've heard great things about the CompCams XFI280, but I think that might be too much for my heads and intake. I'm sure it would work great with new AFR 195's and an HSR, but I'm short on dough. What cam would you recommend with my setup? Down the road I'd like to put better heads and intake on it, but for now what can I do to satisfy my need for speed?

Primarily I'd like to move my power-range up a bit. As this isn't a daily driver anymore, I want to move the powerband up to around 6000rpms. What cams have worked for those with a similar setup?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks guys!

IMHO, I'd wait and do it together as TPI isn't going to happily live with much more cam than you already have, certainly not the one you mentioned. Any LTR, even TPIS, AS&M or SLP runners are pretty much all done at 5500. To operate at 6K or more, you'll need a short runner design like the HSR you spoke of or a Miniram.

Re: Camshaft selection

there is more to it then Just a Cam..whats the RPM it stops pulling at now? with all the new parts?

i would look at the rear end.. and tranny for the nexed upgrade.
just doing a bit deeper gears will make the car move a bit faster.

you can have any cam / intake you want..with out the gears and convertr to make them work..it will be a DOG!

what's the gears now 3.23? 3.42? step up to 3.73's or 4.10's you have a over drive right?.. after all your not going to be driving 70mph on the freeway.. stick to 55/60mph and you will be fine.

the guys who say 4.10's are to low for the street..drive slow cars and worry about things like Gas price and whos .5 cheaper in town.
and drive 4 miles to buy it..

WORKS LIKE THIS (you have to have them all work together)
street car...drag car...anycar

Eng (TPI cams up to 242 @50 and 600 lift with custom chip)
pulls all the way to 6300rpm just fine
Convrtr
Tranny
gears
tire size
chassi
You get them all in the same ball park.. and you will feel it all working

Re: Camshaft selection

I'm upgrading to 3.73's now, it currently has 2.73's. I know this will make a huge difference, so I'll wait until this is done before I tear the motor down again. I don't want to go over 3.73s, as the car will be seeing some highway miles (I'm in New Mexico) but with a .63 overdrive trans I can still cruise at 70 at 2000 rpm's.

I can get it to rev to 5500, but its straining to do it, most likely because of the tall gears it usually has. It stops pulling somewhere around 4500, not bad I guess for an LTR setup.

Trans is stock 700R4 with a 2400 stall B&M converter. Switching to a WC-T5 next, which I hope will last a bit with the 3.73 gears and stock tires. After that, built Richmond T5 or T-56.

I'll be sure to wait and see how the trans and gear swap goes before I dig into the motor again, I'm just trying to get the most out of my setup now.
