88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

Well I purchased an 88 Camaro back in october (see my post in engine swap) but decided to throw a carbed 305 in it to get it running. I have everything in the car, but yesterday ran into trouble installing some of accessories.

I bought a serpentine belt for the car and was going to use the belt tensioner that came with the car, but thats when I realized I didnt have the right mix of parts. I have all pulleys for the serpentine belt, but my water pump has an extra bolt hole for a different type of power steering pump mount (which made me unable to mount using the 88s power steering bracket) so I figured I could just swap out the water pump for another type and just reuse the pulley. Wrong! The 4 bolt holes on the pulley didn't match up with the other water pump. It looks like the crank pulley has provision for either v belt or the serpentine system as well as my water pump pulley. I need advice on what I need to buy to get this running or if it will work. I am going to use an another alternator I have that uses a v belt pulley, but I need advice... I am dumb for putting in the engine with the wrong pulleys.

Re: 88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

I am not sure if I am even mounting things correctly either given that I have an older 305 with a ton of random parts on it. It was originally TBI but now has an edelbrock performer intake and edelbrock carb on it (I had to drill the intake to get it to fit). From pictures it seems that the alternator on the 88s mounted on the drivers side, but I have mine mounted on a bracket on the passenger side. I wish my manual specified this.

Well I think I am going to grind down the extra bolt tab on my current water pump and use the belt tensioner/Ac compressor bracket (idler pulley instead?) and use the PS pump/alternator mount I have now. Without a smog pump am I going to need another idler? thanks!

Re: 88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

Sounds like you have the crank pulley from the 1/2 serp 1/2 v-belt setups - they were on the TPI motors for a few years. The alternator from those cars are different than the serp alternators - the 1/2 1/2 setup uses an alternator with mounting tabs at 6 & 12 oclock, the serp system uses an alternator with mounts at 4 and 12 oclock.

Water pump: Serp system water pumps are REVERSE direction, given the belt path of the serp system. The 1/2 1/2 systems and the v-belt systems are normal direction water pumps, so make sure your belt routing makes the pump turn the right way!

The serp belt can be ran without a smog pump pulley, but the A/C must be in place (or an A/C delete pulley) as far as I know - there's a tech article at www.thirdgen.org/serpentine A/C and Smog Pump delete pulleys can be picked up at any NAPA for about $40 each.

But - how all this is going to work exactly for you I can't just say or tell you - like you said you have a hodge podge of different parts, and I'm not sure if you can make it all work. You might have to pick either the 1/2 1/2 system, the serp system, or the vbelt system, and just get the right brackets and accessories for it. If you have more serp system parts than others, I'd search the JY's for the rest of the mounts etc. to complete it, as this would be the cheapest alternative.

Good Luck!

Re: 88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

Oops! I typed the link wrong - I corrected it.

I have a 1992, didn't like the serp brackets, so I swapped everything over to the 1/2 & 1/2 system, switched alternators and water pumps, and relocated the alternator to the pass side - looks alot nicer/cleaner to me. (I had already deleted A/C and smog pump)

Re: 88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

ah perfect! My bracket has the idler for the AC compressor and smog pump already installed so I will probably go with the serp setup. I dont know about my water pump rotation though. The serp style pulley will only fit on this one water pump (I have 3 others) I have so I figure its probably the correct rotation. Tomorrow I am going to use a cutting wheel to remove the 1/4 inch of material blocking installation of my alt/power steering bracket.

Re: 88 Camaro: Belts belts belts?

heres a pic, maybe someone can tell me something about my water pump pulley. I know its nothing special, but I skipped some of the details and threw this old TBI 305 in as a temporary engine until I finish up a 350... Of course I converted it to carb.

Yep I had the smaller width 1/2 serp 1/2 v setup. I just need to use my v belt power steering pump and I am good to go.
