Great heads in their day. 50 years ago.

Lots of things were great in their day; like, atlatls were great in their day when people were still throwing stuff at their breakfast as it ran by, trying to get it to stop long enough for them to eat it. Same basic principle.

They're 50 years old. Ya think we might have learned something, as a species, in that time, about how to make a motor run better?

Go to the track. How many of the cars THAT WIN have those on them?

Look at your alternator. How ya gonna bolt that to those? (No you can't drill and tap them, there's nothing there to drill and tap, it's only about 1/8" thick)

Probably not a good plan. Not even the people with "classic" 283s will actually pay money for those any more. Haven't for near 40 years that I've been dealing with them, probably longer than that. Don't be this guy's "greater fool". Let some Vette idiot have that honor.

Decent heads for a 305 that you can just bolt on is a real gray area to me. Sure there's plenty you can port, machine, or aftermarket but as far as bolt on and go there isn't much. The only thing I can think of is aluminum L98's. Anything else has something that makes it not desirable for the job.

There's options if you want to port, the heads that came on it are a good candidate. L31 Vortecs are a good choice but need milled quite a bit. Looking at what Fast355 did there's no denying ported Vortec 305 "059" heads (L30?) are the best option I've seen if you want high HP.

Camshaft really depends on what you want to do with car, and/or motor among other things.

Good to see you haven't lost any of your charm sofakingdom

Re: 283 power pack heads on 305?

The 081s are the best heads for a 305. They're cheaper and more common than the aluminum 'vette heads, and they're designed for the small bore, unlike the aluminum heads. Put the aluminum heads on a 305, and because of the shrouding, the real flow won't be any better than the 081s. The only advantage then is the weight.
081s have no real drawbacks. But if you want even more power, then milled Vortec 350 heads are the next step up.
