MAF Burn off problem

My car is having some issues with the MAF burn off. When I have the relay plugged in the car will get a code 33 and will spit and sputter when im driving it. Then, if I unplug the relay the code 33 goes away and so does the spittiung and sputtering. However, the car will stall when I come to a stop or when slowing down quickly. What do you guys think could be doing this? This all started when I put new wiring harness connectors on that plug into the relays for the MAF power, burnoff and fuel pump relays.

I have the same code and the same stalling/sputtering, but I haven't unplugged my sensor, I'm going to mess with mine and see what I figure out

Re: MAF Burn off problem

My car had the code 34, then i replaced the maf, no change, maf connector and burnoff relay, fuel pump relay connector and relay (termials loose), now i am getting a code 33. Im thinkin the ecm connecter is loose or the ecm is bad. now im trying to make sure i replaced the right relay. i replaced the rectangle one with new connector also which i believe is the fuel pump relay, and the oval one in the middle with 5 wires which i think is the burnoff relay. the reason i am unsure is that the haynes manual has different wire colors goin to the burnoff relay. manual shows blk/pnk, org, blk/wht, red, dk blue. my relay has different colors with a thick tan and white wire in each relay. i have no power to the dk blue wire at the maf with key on, running, or after shut down. 0 ohms from maf to both oval relays on the blue wire (wire splices near relays to both oval relays) the red wire at maf has power only when running and the green has 5volts with key on and running. two black wires one with wht strip both have ground. this is driving me insane! i need a factory manual or someone that has been down this road before. am i suppose to have power on the blue wire at the maf after the key is shut off for 5 seconds or am i wrong? i was checking with the sensor unplugged if that makes a difference, i am gettin frustrated with this problem since the dealership never fixed it (have receipts from them throwin parts at it in the 90s) the guy who sold it to me warned me it has been an ongoing problem since 91 but now the light comes on everytime and has to be fixed.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

Well I don't have much experience with the electrical stuff, I'm usually working on simpler motor parts

But, I did look at my MAF sensor and it has been remanufactured, and I still have the code. This may not help you but I noticed the belt on my smog pump is missing and it can cause the codes I'm getting I believe.

Try googling something about the wires possibly? I'll see if I can figure anything out about your issue while I'm messing with mine since no one on this site has given me any input :/

Good luck!

Re: MAF Burn off problem

well i was able to get ahold of a diagnostic flow chart and schematic for code 33 and from what I read its most likely going to be the signal wire in my case DK GRN (ck 998) going to the maf is open or has high resistance, or the the (BLK/WT) ground. Now I already have a newer MAF (2700mi) which means nothing but i am debating on running new wires or warranty the MAF just to see if that solves it before i start. Also want to replace the ecm pins at least for those circuits.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

i am going to warranty the maf since i had a corroded distributor cap before i replaced my distributor and i rember it backfired before. when my engine was running i have 0.6 volt spikes intermittantly on the burnoff wire which is weird, but im wondering if the backfire may have cracked somethin in the maf and now its shorting out. i pulled all the ecm pins for the ground and signal wire and they didnt look spread so i made them a little tighter with tiny pliers since i couldnt wait to order them. test drove it 10 miles everything ok so i went to tim hortons and was in a long drive thru line. as soon as i left and got near my house cruisin in 4th light throttle the car lost power completely and i noticed the air fuel guage pegged lean, code 33 popped in with ses light, had to heel toe it home once again to keep it running with af gauge pegged lean. what a pita, new maf better work.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

go to helm.com ,order the appropriate manual for your car.it will have all your answers.BUT do NOT buy a haynes or chilton manual and expect anything but their usual vague fit all answers.get the right info and youre more than half way there

Re: MAF Burn off problem

My car is doing the same thing I get code 33 and when I get on the gas it spits and sputters and then after feathering it through the throttle it runs strong at WOT and when it warms up it barely does it.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

I have followed the diagnostic charts for the code and it comes up as a bad maf burn off relay. I have changed it out with a couple other relays and it does the same thing.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

Yeah I've found two different results for code 34, low pressure and bad MAF sensor.... Hames manual says MAF, but other places I've searched tell me low pressure or low vacuum.... Low vacuum sounds more like what the car is doing since my MAF sensor is already refurbished

Re: MAF Burn off problem

I got my maf warrantied but it snowed here so guna wait a week or so to try it out. also burned two chips using tunerpro. one of them i changed the MAF high diagnostic error threshold from 45 gms/sec to 79 gms/sec. the other one i changed it to 99 gms/sec. not sure if this will work, but i think my whole problem may be too much airflow. i am using the micro-tech 49-1019 maf from advance.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

tryed the new maf yesterday and same problem within a few miles. put the chip in and its been fine so far (30 miles). i think the 1.6 rockers, 52mm t.b. and headers with a hollow cat combined created my problem. i noticed the light comes on usually in 4th at just above 2k rpms. im gunna try another chip with a threshold around 50-55 gms/sec just to see what happens.

Re: MAF Burn off problem

Can a code 33 be set off if fuel pressure is too high? I was setting the fuel pressure when I got this check engine light with a code 33.
