Coil making visual sparks?
Car seams to have a strange misfire not constant just sometimes either hot or cold runs fine most of the time but has a strange misfire under 2k rpm. over that and I dont notice it.
Opened the hood the other night and was looking at he coil (it was in the dark)and noticed flashing light coming off of it or out of it handled it with my hand and did not get shocked mount for it is somewheres...just buging me that sometimes it starts and runs like new then other times I am Mr. Magoo.
Would a malfunctioning coil cause a random missfire?
Would 10mm wires fry a stock coil or cause a random missfire?
Would a stuck injector cause a random missfire?
About ready to yank out the wires my nascar buddy gave me and put back in the good 8.8mm MSD set I have, if a new coil dont fix this might get a 8226
havent even looked at the cap/rotor as it is kinda newish

Has anyone ever seen light flashes coming out of a coil on a running engine?
...GO LOOK NOW!!! ....well when it gets dark.
yea I know coils are cheep just wonder if the flashes are common.

Re: Coil making visual sparks?
Only if the insulation had broken down on the coil wire or the coil tower itself. And then it was more like "sparks" jumping to the nearest conveniient ground. And believe me, it would always "bite" me if I put my fingers near it. A "halo" like you describe..... no, haven't seen that myself. I have heard it is possible and results from ionization around high voltage sources.
But I've worked on a bezillion ignition systems over the years. My gut tells me that ANY lights around the coil can not be good, whether they can bite you or not. In all likelyhood the insutation broke down in some non-obvious way to cause the effect. Replace the coil and coil wire would be my first attempt at a fix, and then see how it goes from there.
