metal air pipe that goes behind the engine???

Hey guys, very random part I am having an issue with.

I have a v8 5.0 automatic trans am 1986. Its fuel injected.

when replacing the valve cover gaskets and having a heck of a time getting crap out of the way to remove the covers i notice that something on the side/behind the engine is loose and can move up and down and i hear metal against metal when it goes up.

if you can think in your mind theres the air diverter valve with its two relays in the front of it next to the alternator????

well theres a bunch of rubber air hoses that comes off of it. the one that is causing me trouble is the one that connects to a metal air pipe that goes behind the engine. I'm thinking a clamp is gone or loose. the connector to it looks like the those metal air pipes connectors that connect to the exhaust manifolds and loop around to the other manifolds to feed some exhaust fumes into the engine.

i know it sounds confusing but for those who know what i am talking about. is there a way to clamp it down or tighten its clamp without having to remove the engine?

every time i hit a bump i hear that metal against metal like loose change and im sure its that darn air pipe that is loose.

Factory clamps on that system are just plastic squeeze-type clamps. They have a set of one-way teeth on them so when you squeeze the two "ears" together to toghten it down it holds at that setting. Shouldn't take more than a pair of pliers.

oh i know exactly what you are talking about when the rubber hose connects to the metal hose it has those clamps to keep from air leaks but doesnt hold it down anywhere. but...... the metal pipe goes down and behind and that is where its shaking.

so like i said is there something i can reach from underneath the car so i dont have to remove the entire engine. i have no clue on what is back there or how things are bolted to stay in place

Re: metal air pipe that goes behind the engine???

If you're talking about the rear pipe of the A.I.R. system on mine there was a pipe running from the passenger side to drivers side, it was bolted to the back of the heads those bolts also were for the ground wires, there is also a pipe running to the catalyst maybe that is what is loose on yours. I remember those 2 nuts were a pain to get at but it can be done from the top.
