stalling, stuttering, dying problem

i have a 1989 iroc-z 5.7L and the check engine light is on here and there. it seems to (when checkengine light is on) to stutter (RPMs drop and it nosedives) somtimes always around 1800 RPM. The TPS is new MAF is also new. and just today i was coasting down a hill and the engine cut out, i had to pull off the road put into park and re-start it. also it seem to have no power when engine light is on. My friend is an automovtive mechanic and ive told him the problems im having and he can only think the crankshaft position senor would cause all these symtoms however i google it and cant seem to find any real info regarding this. its drivable just very annoying and not sure if im doin more damage by driving everyday.

this is my DD so it needs fixed asap

any ideas are very apreciated.

Re: stalling, stuttering, dying problem

What code are you getting? You can use a paper clip between the a & b terminals on the ALDL connector and turn the key to the on position, but DO NOT START it. You should get 1 flash followed by 2 more flashes. This is code 12. It will flash this code 3 times followed by the codes you're really after. The ALDL is located on drivers side next to the console behind a snap on cover. Post the codes you get. And FYI, you don't have a crank position sensor.

Re: stalling, stuttering, dying problem

Hey Guys,

I'm a first time poster here but long time Camaro fan! I'm looking for some help with my '87 IROC 5.7. Much like the original post from Bakers, the check engine light has been illuminating randomly at various rpms. When the light comes on the car studders and it feels like the power just drops right off and actually wants to die.

The code reader said it was the mass airflow sensor acting up. I replaced the mass air flow sensor but the problem is still occurring. I have been told that my K&N air filters will tend to screw up the sensor, so I tried running paper filters & same thing the check engine still comes on randomly.

Anyone know what could be the problem?
