90 camaro rs check engine light

Hi I recently came across a 1990 camaro rs from a buddy who was leaving for the military. Awesome condition inside and out. All original interior not one crack or tear inside. Cherry. Red interior on black. Everything under the hood seems to be there and un tampered with to the best of my knowledge. Car ran great when I bought it for 500 bucks. Check engine light would pop on when it was hot out. 80 degrees and above in stop n go traffic. Then turn off. When it comes on the car looses half of its power. Idles up and down. Dies back fires. Runs like crap. Sucks down all my fuel. Horrible combination. Since I bought it I've replaced the plugs which are ac delco r45ts plugs. An oxygen sensor and the map sensor. Now tonight I replaced the vacuum hose leading to the map sensor from the rear of the throttle body and it really helped out. Turned off the light. Or so I thought. I can drive the car for a few miles cruzin at 65 mph and all of a sudden the light will come on and all my prior symptoms will occur. Then I will park the car shut it off for ten minutes and that same thing will happen. Drive for a few miles and the light will come back on. Cars details are 90 camaro rs 5spd with a vortec 305 in it tbi. Idk what is causing this and I'm thinkin maybe the iac valve. I really don't want to hassle with the computer having to go through a re learn proccess but anything at this point is better than my car runnin like it does. Any input is greatly appreciated. Also a hose on my charcoal canister by my driver side headlight is cracked and there are 2 vacuum hoses plugged. 1 straight off the manifold into a 90 fiting and 1 off the front of the throttle body. Not sure where they go but have been since I bought it and is my doing do to funds. Thank you. My name is jake. Previous owner also informed me it could be a head gasket. Also I was looking for vacuum leaks under the hood and notice a burned oil smell. Really strong. Let me know if u have any more questions. Car has 160 some ought thousand miles on it.

You are supposed to pull the error codes
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...s-dumbies.html

to see what problem the check engine light is pointing to before throwing random parts at it

Re: 90 camaro rs check engine light

MAT sensor diagnostics Code 23 low temp indicated, code 42 Ignition bypass circuit error.
The code 42 could be a stored code from the last time the timing was set. You should focus on trouble shooting on the code 23 first. check the connector for corrosion and check the ground for the sensor.

mat sensore are cheap its the same sensor as the cts just used to measure air temp instead of coolant temp.

Re: 90 camaro rs check engine light

since you stated the heads have been changed to vortecs you might want too look at the original mat ground. I believe its on a stud on the back of the passenger side head. mat reading vs temp.

That's not weird at all. Your car is reading that it is literally 40 below zero outside. Therefore it is dumping gas into the engine to go with all that super condensed air that it thinks is going in. When it really is colder outside, then things are better.

I assume you have a 3.1L VIN T engined car, is that right? The manifold air temp sensor is in the front passenger side area of the engine compartment. It appears to be installed into some kind of air intake ducting according the line drawing in my 1990 service manual. It appears to be in the vicinity of where the battery tray would be if it were on that side of the car.

EDIT: I just saw something in your original post about a Vortec 305. If that's the case, I have no idea what kind of setup you might have and what may have been changed.

That said, a low temp reading is a sign of a sensor being unplugged or having a bad ground. I believe this sensor shares a ground return with the throttle position sensor. That seems to be working for you, so the ground is probably ok. I'd say the sensor is either missing or dead.

Did you find the sensor and/or the wiring harness for it? There are ways to test the sensor and wiring, but we need to know what kind of state it is all in. From someone simply snipping the harness off at some location, you'd get a low temp reading message since the sensor would be effectively unplugged.

Re: 90 camaro rs check engine light

Sweet I'm gonna look into getting that part. Also I think my harness on my car uis shorting out. I lost my tach today. Someone has wired. Aftermarket fan into my car. Credibility is questionable. It stayed on for a second after I turned my key off yesterday as with my heater then shut off on its own,
