Hey guys, I have an 89 IROC with the G92 option (i think, checking RPO code in the morning) point is, I'm hearing a strange noise coming from the rear of the car while driving. first off, I can hear a faint squeaking noise, i recently put on new calipers, pads and even new rotors and i put new rear shocks as well as new outer wheel bearings in and i can STILL hear it and second, there is also a clicking noise coming from back there as well. i can only hear the clicking noise when i gently hold the brakes at lower speeds.

when i jacked the car up to replace my shocks i decided to adventure around and try and find the noise. i turned the rear passenger wheel and i could hear a few faint clicks coming from somewhere as i made a full rotation, and the passenger wheel was easy to turn....the rear driver's wheel actually took some strength to turn and i could still hear the faint clicking noise. My mechanic took a look and thinks my rear end is going out and i just need to replace the gears. I have my doubts on this and would like all of your opinions on what it might be. the car only has 68,000 miles on it and i don't do burnouts in it or anything...well maybe one or two hahaha. I try and take care of my car as best i can.

Well you could pull the differential cover off and take a look. Time for a fluid change anyway. Check old fluid for metal contamination.

well, when i replaced the outer wheel bearings, i ended up pulling the gears and putting new oil in it anyhow. I didn't notice any metal in the oil, but at the same time i didn't know to look for it either.

would anything else cause this? I've never heard of a bad rear end making a clicking noise like that.

maybe a bad U-Joint? apparently they can cause the same noises

Turns out i need a new bearing set (carrier bearings and pinion bearings) about $130 at advance auto.

Alright Firebird, so from what I've learned it could be MULTIPLE things going on here.

bad outer wheel bearings, bad carrier bearings, bad pinion gear bearings, bad U-Joint, OR it could be brake related. meaning something is catching in your brakes. could be a bad caliper, warped rotor, bad brake pads.

my first advice would be to jack your rear end up and put it on stands, grab your drive shaft and try to turn it, if it has ANY movement (seems loose) at all you need a new U-Joint.

next grab the yoke and push up on it, if it moves you probably need new bearings or bushings for your pinion gear.

if all that checks out ok, put the car in neutral and turn the tires by hand and listen for the noise. if it sounds like its coming from a wheel, take it off and make sure your brakes are perfectly in order (good pads, the calipers are good, etc.) go ahead and lube up the caliper sliders while you're at it.

If it turns out to not be the brakes, you might have a bad wheel/axle bearing. those are about 20-30 bucks at advance or auto zone.

finally, i would pull the differential cover off. make sure you have the car secured and have an oil pan. once you pull it, look to see if the oil seems kinda burnt, the differential pan should have a magnet on it, if it has little metal shavings in it you either need new carrier bearings and pinion bearings or your gears are worn out.
