Camaro Crossfire?

Was there ever a crossfire injection option on any of the third gen camaros or firebirds? Is there any noticeable difference in going from TBI to crossfire?

yes it was sometime around 1983 and the performance was poor.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

crossfire injection was optional on 1982 and 83 z28s and trans ams equipped with automatic transmissions-this setup had a pair of 1-13/16 bore TBIs rated at 275 CFM each mounted atop a crossram intake manifold.Electronic spark control with knock sensor was used and the the CFI 305s had 9.5:1 compression ratio-1 point higher than the standard LG4 305.Main stock drawback with CFI was the restrictive intake manifold runners followed by the stock fuel pump and fuel pressure setting.Modifications to improve manifold flow and a boost in fuel pressure make a dramatic increase in performance and rpm capability with CFI

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

Yes it was available, as described.

It was the early type of TBI.

Its performance was at least as poor as described. I recall the 1st TBI car I drove, a rent-a-mule on some business trip in about 1980 or 81, a Citation or something with a 2.5; it ran "OK", had "OK" power, started right up and all that, kinda looked weird with that thing on top of the TB kind of just peeing down into there, but just ... had ... no ... pep. It reminded me of driving a tractor: plenty of power and all, but no matter how many horsepower it had, it wasn't going to win a race. Imagine my disgust when I blew into the local stealership to test-drive one of the new AWESOME Indy 500 pace cars, and what to my wondering eyes should appear, but 2 of those stoopid things. You guessed it... if 1 works a 2.5L "OK", then 2 should work a 5.0 EXACTLY the same. Which was of couse the case. It ran EXACTLY like the Citation thing. "OK" power, ran "OK" generally, but had absolutely no sense of excitement whatsoever. Slow revving, lazy throttle response, and that PITIFUL 200C transmission that made the car feel like there was a bowl of oatmeal stuck in the drive train somewhere. I got back in the 79 Z28 4-speed I was driving at the time and left. Didn't come back until the HO (L69) arrived at the stores in early summer (late May more or less) of 83.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

I have a 1982 Camaro with the Crossfire engine. Can anyone tell me where the ESC module is located? My car was parked for a year, and something chewed some of the wires in the engine bay. I removed the harness and traced the wires from a diagram I found here, but now it has a lot of spark knock when I drive it. Never had that before. There is also a wire that I could not trace that is located on the firewall behind the distributor. Can anyone tell me what it is for? I have attached a pic of the location, so any help would be great. Just need to know where the ESC is located. I have seen nothing that even closely resembles the pics of the ESC I have seen online. Thank you. Gary.Camaro Crossfire?-camaro-firewall-wire.jpg

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

ESC module is on the firewall, somewhat lower than that. It's a flat black box about 2½" x 3½" x about ½" thick with a long connector all the way along one of the long sides.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

the '82 ESC module is under the dash close by the ECM-it is a black plastic box much larger than the '83 up underhood mounted ECM module. The '82 setup,if faulty, can be swapped to the '83 style and it will work the same.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

I had the dash and harness out of the car yesterday, and I didn't see it either on the firewall or next to the ECM. I'll look again this weekend to see if I can locate it. I would like to eliminate the spark knock so I can drive it. The car only has 67,000 miles on it and, otherwise, runs very well.

I don't think it is by the ecm. IIRC you can see it when you drop down the valance trim piece under the map pocket in the Trans Am. I would imagine it is in a similar location in the Camaro.
Looks like this-

I found a pic on the net of its location. You can see the black box on the passenger side of the dash in this pic.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

Does anyone have a decent diagram of the distributor wiring harness? I need to know how the tach is connected. Mine works, but the resistor that is bolted to the firewall is not connected to anything. I need to know how where it should be connected. It has a brown wires - one side is missing and the other has a connector but nothing is connected. I thought that it was part of the harness that extends out of the bottom of the distributor and connects to the main harness, but it doesn't. The wire for the tach extends from the distributor to the distributor cap. I cannot locate any wiring diagram that shows this particular setup, and the assembly manual I bought is basically useless.

Try ebay or Rock auto. 82 is altogether different and will cost you. The 83 knock sensor is a common piece.

I tried e-bay and no luck - But, will a 83 knock sensor work on the 82 crossfire?

I just checked too. Looks like they are tough to find. I believe you can use the later model knock sensor but the connector is different. You would need to do some splicing to get it to work.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

Does anyone know if a renegade crossfire intake will fit on a regular 350 or 305 or is it specific for the 84 corvette engine. The Crossfire Injection on a camaro was only available on a 305 and the intakes are restrictive i was wondering if the Renegade intake would fit my 305 or 350 or will I have to find a corvette motor.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

No, the motors are all the same as far as that, it will bolt right up.

That used to be pretty much the hot ticket for those. Then when the later TBI motors came out, starting in 87 or whatever in trucks and later in these cars, those ECMs have about 100 times the computational power that the old late 70s one in the CFI did. The thing to do was then to get one of those, re-pin everything and hook it up, then you could actually TUNE it, either by programming "chips" or with EBL or the like. No idea how much results any of that gives though.

Re: Camaro Crossfire?

I used to day dream of building a crossfire intake using two dual jet TBIs instead of the singles on the old crossfires. To be worth anything power-wise, you would need to pretty much remake the base with much larger runners and make a custom top plate to fit the two dual TBs. It would certainly be unique and if done right could make some power from a built small block. It would be like an EFI version of an old crossram dual quad. The larger bore TBIs from a 7.4 would be best.
