Car: 1986 Pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 5.0
Transmission: 700R4
can i still get trouble codes?
im having issues of idling real low. sometimes i get the SES light, but goes off next key cycle. it is currently not on, can i still get codes? i tried doing the paper clip thing but only got 12 it just keeps flashing that

If there is no misfire, and only a low idle, there may not be a stored error code. I'd start by checking the IAC, its air passages, the throttle body, and the setting of the TPS. Cleaning the IAC, the IAC air passages, and TB are common service/maintenance items. Once clean, if the problem persists, check the TPS voltage per the service manual.
If there is a misfire, start looking at the pickup coil, ignition module, its wiring, and the ESC module.
Don't just start replacing modules and parts. Perform some diagnostics first.

Too high
Reset the TPS to the correct value
DIAGNOSTICS = testing ,evaluation , following a fault flow chart to work out what your problem is
Hopefully by using the factory service manual for your car
