My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )

Figured id share my stupid cheap , stupid power build here since most of u guys dont make it into the power adder or racing section of the site

originally i had an l98 ish engine in the car with a pair of 57mm turbos making around 500-575 hp , once winter hit i figured it was time to stop screwing around and make some serious power

the cost of the build includes the turbos, ecm, fuel injectors, headers , not just the engine

the engine consists of a factory 4 bolt 0010 block , gm crank , aftermarket bushed rods , speedpro 10cc dished pistons , off shore copys of the dart pro 1 platnium heads ( 260cfm out of the box) hsr intake

the block has been bored .020 over , and line bored

the crank has been cut .010/.010
Name: IMG_3034_zpsabe111c9.jpg

pistons are speedpro/sealed power 4423dcp .020 over

rods are scat extreme competition rods rated for 700hp

Size: 29.7 KB

heads are 200cc runner 64cc chambers with 2.02/1.60 valves
i bought these bare for 400 shipped to my door , these are copys of dart pro 1 platniums and flow 260cfm , and can be ported to over 300cfm

the tpi is ditched in favor of a vortec hsr , i purchased a used nx mainline direct port nitrous system that will be plumped into the hsr

neither has arived yet so ill post pics when they get here

the cam i purchased before i had these heads when i was going to use a set of factory castings heavily ported , its a summit 224/224 @ .050 with a set of stainless 1.6/1.5 rockers.

i do belive im going to change out the cam for a 234/238 .585/.600 on 110 lsa

now i know u are all thinking how in the hell is that going to make 1000hp , on motor the thing should make close to 500 , but to top the whole thing off its getting a pair of p-trimed gt3582 turbos good for about 650hp a piece

the crank is in the block and installed with 2.5 though clearance across the mains.( took 3 sets of bearings to get the clearances i wanted )

this weekend ill be installing the rods and pistons , and assembling the heads.
the pistions have a .002 piston to wall clearance , and rings are going in with a .029 top gap and . 023 second gap

pistures and more to come

they are not forged , they are hyperutectic they dont need a huge piston to wall clearance , manufacture specs them at .001

should i have bought some forged PROBABLY ,
have i built a single turbo engine with forged pistons NOPE, well one because i had to order custom made pistons
have i ever broken a hyper piston BIG FAT NOPE

My tune has to be right on or i will shatter the piston, with all my years if tuning and building turbo engines i have never had an engine failure related to the tune , hell ive never grenaded one either

if i had an aftermarket block and crank i might have sprung for forged , but hypers have been working just fine for me so im not going to stray from my normal type of setup that i do

thanks im sure ill need it , this build was originally supposed to be around 700-800 hp , but then i found out the heads i was going to use were trashed

so i ended up with a really good flowing head and intake and going to make alot more power then i originally wanted to , i will admit it will spend most of its life at low boost around 650-700 hp

I don't mean you any ill will but at that power level the weakest list will be the stock block, especially when you "turn up the boost".

My NA combo making 670 HP did not survive long with a stock block.

the old motor was making close to mid-low 10 second power on boost AND nitrous (11's on boost alone) , i couldnt get it there on boost alone, upon teardown i found out why, most of the boost was being pushed into the valve covers.i was pushing this thing into the low 20 psi numbers and still couldnt get it there

had it not been for the valve guides and bad valves it would have made it on boost alone

thts the whole reason this one is got some decent heads and a much better intake , dont forget im almost 1.5 miles above sea level doesnt exactly make it easy

its getting a main girdle and a good ole crossing of the fingers lol, i fully expect to run over the crankshaft at some point

1000hp should get me around 800-850 wheel

Do a block fill and it will hold. Guys on turboforum have done similar numbers in stock blocks

ive been debating that not sure if a girdle alone will be enough , i live on the edge of the dessert it gets damn hot here in the summer time , im a lil worried about over heating issues on the street

even with dual fans , 3 core aluminum radiator i had a hard time keeping the old motor cool when in boost for a while

Those valves were the ones in the vid you posted right? Just wow on that, wrap them with some duct tape and you'll be good to go, rofl!

lol yeah the video of the valves moving back and forth over 1/8th inch in the guides , i was lossing all my boost pressure up into the valve covers , it blew my umbrella seals clear up to the bottom of the retianers

Yeah you will need a real good cooling system plus oil cooler. Not a full fill maybe half fill. Give it some strength. 800 rear wheel is stout. When those caps start flexing around that lower main webbing is gonna be taxed. Lol alittle extra meat down there in the jackets should help keep it somewhat rigid

Damn, I don't think you'll have any problems breaking 10s on boost alone, especially with what it ran with the bad valves.

Wish I had a shop, I just have a carport and shed :/ My dad will probably get one built soon cause his 71 pontiac t37 needs a body off resto and the 455 dropped in

i was so damn surprised when i pulled the valve springs and found that , the motor didnt smoke at all , and didnt make any funny noises , but u can imagine how much boost i was lossing threw those guides , and i know those valves had to be leaking

That's pretty cool. I know people in NJ, where I grew up, with shops, don't know anyone yet with a shop where I moved in FL.

Did it go into valvefloat? Or act like a rev limiter? Mine did. We thought bad springs til i found guides worn and springs tested fine. Reused them on my new shaft rocker system and now pull proper rpm no float no rev limit

it had aftermarket springs on it , and i was only reving it to just over 5k so it never showed signs of valve float , i did get the odd pop here and there when the motor was up that high , but nothing that would make me think valves were floating

no heads checked out right out of the box on the seats and guides , ill assemble them myself and setup the springs

machine work was for block, might have an added cost for balance job once rods get here. im going to weigh the new pistons and rods and see how much heavier or lighter they are then the old ones , and either machine them myself if they are heavier to bring it back into balance , or send the stuff out to have it balanced if it goes the other way

so far the pistons are the same wieght as the old ones it all depends on the weight of the rods now which im sure are going to be slightly heavier then the old rods

Where did you get those turbos from? That offer sounds good, might be a little while before I can jump on it though :/

while most arent a fan of them , i am a huge fan of the ebay turbos , the turbos i originally had on the car are 150 bucks each

ive run both the ebay and brand name turbos , even did back to back testing on my v6 car with a 61mm ebay turbo and a garett 61mm turbo results between the 2 were very close , still have the garett on my v6 car though

at that price if one failed I wouldn't care! The only thing I'm concerned about is the plumbing and oil lines, I have a welder in the garage but as far as sourcing pieces and spending time welding I'm not a big fan of.

the valve job on them is really nice , of course when my valves get here ill have to dbl check that everything plays nicely together, but the valve seats are in spec just as if if i did the seats myself, i actually have a valve seat grinder if i need to redo them , i think my one stone is shot though

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )

well i am excited everything will be here in a few days so it shouldnt be long before i can start driving this thing again , then again now that im close to having the motor back together were starting to get snow --- go figure

ive currently got a th400 with brake being built , i really wanted to put a power glide in the car , but then id have to run an insanely numerically low gear in the rear for everyday driving and it would just kill the fun of street driving it , if i dont like the 400 im going to go for a built t56

i got my bar to cage conversion kit ordered along with a bolt on parachute mount.
ive got to order up a bunch of ptfe -8 and -6 lines for the fuel system still but for now the factory lines will get me by as long as the return line can flow enough fuel at low rpm low load , i only currently have enough injector for around 750- 800 crank hp anyways , when im ready to give it hell ill order up the 160# injectors which should be good for around 1,200 hp on e-85 (and just enough on methanol) which will give me the flow safety margin im comfortable with

hopefully my fuel pumps actually flow what they are rated for if not i dont know what im going to do pump wise

hope to be taking the car down to las vegas motor speedway end of this month

Re: My $3,500 353sbc 1000hp build ( Cheap Thrills )

everything is here , except for the stuff i ordered up tonight ( head studs and head gaskets )
so this weekend ill get the short block assembled , doesnt look like my studs or head gaskets will be till tuesday

i bought 2 sets of gaskets , im going to try a set of .021 mls gaskets first , if those wont seal up im going to switch to the .016 composite gaskets i ordered

normally i run a cheap felpro on my stuff , this way if anything happens it takes out the gasket and not the engine , unfortunately doing this with aluminum heads usually results in a torched head , so im hoping the mls gaskets seal up

other then that i need to pick up a new knock sensor and a few odds and ends ,l nice alt bracket and a manual steering box . if any of u guys happen to have an s10 manual steering box u want to sell let me know

th400 should be done by next weekend , the last thing i need to upgrade is the rear end , my usual choice is a s60 , i think i may try one of the diy ford 8.8 swaps , or i may take one of the dana 60's i have laying around and try to make my own tq arm mount

other then that i was wondering if anyone has experience with the edlelbrock proflow xt manifolds my manifold choices are very limited with the raised runner head , the hsr has some air distro problems when running very high boost specifically the back to 2 cyls , which i can actually solve with a flowed set of injectors and just stick 2 injectors that flow a lil less in the back 2 ports , but id rather get a manifold that doesnt have distro issues if at all possible

i almost bought a set of h-beam rods but didnt feel like waiting so im sticking with the scat comp rods

i do not have the money to do the drag week thing , best i can do is take it down to las vegas speedway , and out to the salt flats this summer

the average cost for me to go racing is about $325 in fuel for hauling the car to and from the track + hotel + entry fee + any other expenses. to go racing for a single weekend will prolly cost me about 500+ bucks

i really do miss living a few miles from the racetrack , no need to pay for hotel room or to trailer the car etc etc

So - those are the Scat comp rods? They look nice…actually they look a lot like the Eagle SIR rods I'm running, except a bit beefier.

What's the status? Is it assembled yet?
