Rear main leaking profusely

I pulled a 350 out of a 91 Chevy van for my 91 Camaro. When we were pulling it, the motor and tranny tilted pretty good and oil puked out the back. I assumed (my bad) that it was something to do with the angle we had it at, and that since the van did't leak oil, it still wouldn't. Wrong. It was leaking profusely, so I got to looking at it, and I can see the rear main seal touching the flexplate. I got a prybar and poked around, and the seal slid right back into the oil pan, very easily. This slowed down the leak a lot! While it was running and I was looking at it, the seal (it's orange) looked like it was spinning with the crank.
Is the seal supposed to spin? Is it really that loose?
Something I have never encountered, seems rather odd to me!
