Depends what you want to do to it ands how you plan on using it. Does it need to comply to emissions?

well unforunantly you picked one of the worst cars to work with, the CFI is a total POS. only things you can really do are A) sell it and get a diffrent car or B) grab a 350 and built that and slap it in. since your 16 im sure a complete engine swap might not be an option so i would sell the car, keep that 1,000$ and buy a car that is allready built.

You could change it to carb, or heaven forbid, actually work with the CFI. Bore out the TBIs, throw on some headers and exhaust, a bigger cam, maybe some 305 torquer heads and with that POS called CFI, you're suddenly running 13s, and most cars at high school aren't running 13s. I know there's none at my high school running 14s even.

I guess I'll never get used to seeing ignorant folks dissing something they know nothing about...

Keep the CFI. Assuming the car is in decent shape and needs nothing for safety or legal reasons, do a complete major tune up and get a set of headers and exhaust system. That should burn up your $1000 and give you decent performance.

Go to the Crossfire Injection Vault ( sorry can't remember actual address ) you will find tons of info on CFI and lots of people who can help answer questions. CFI isn't too bad if you don't mind working on it a bit.

sure you can throw a G at it and get it from horrible to mediocre performance but dollor for dollor its really not worth it, kinda like a ***** throwing all that money away when it could have been spent better, im sure if you got a better cam, good gears and some exhaust it would be one of the if not fastest cars in a high school parking lot, noone in highschool has a fast car unless mommy and daddy got them a brand new LS-1. you'll be ok with that car but be paired to have your *** handed to you big time if any big dog rolls around, hence the idea to sell the car and get a good one, you will be able to slap the sh*t out of any high school kid, plus have a little bit of a chance with some of the other rides out there on the street.

Selling it and buying some other car isn't going to help him here guys. Also: Why does everyone on this site think that the solution to every car is a set of headers and a 350?

My first suggestion is to dump the CFI system. Yes you could make it work well, but why spend time and money on a system that even GM admitted sucked. Your cash can be better spent elsewhere.

First off is a set of heads. You can't go larger than 1.94/1.60 valves on a 305. I see an add in Car Craft for a set of rebuilt 65cc heads, new springs, screw in studs etc... $359/pair

Next is an intake and cam kit. The Edelbrock cam/lifter/intake kit is $213.90

Now you need a carb. Again... Edelbrock 600cfm w/elec. choke is $227.95

The above adds up to $800.85... use the remaining $200 to buy a gasket set, plugs, wires and other small things.

Once you've made these mods and saved up some more cash. I'd suggest swapping in another axle with 3.23 or higher gears and then do the headers and exhaust work.

You won't be making huge horsepower with this engine but you will be able to stand up to the 5.0s. Don't expect to be killing LT1s though.
