Alternator was making weird sound -> Now died

Oke guys,

yesterday i posted a thread asking if anyone would know what my sqeeking sound from my alternator could be.

Well... during my little ride to work this morning, my car didn't make any weird noices at all... Funny thing was, the battery didn't get charged either, so i got a little worried...

After a few more miles it wouldn't budge for anything anymore... Although the alternator still delivers some output, it just isn't the amount of voltage you would desire... So slowly on the battery is losing it's power.

So in a state of being totally pissed i called another mechanic and when i just started mentioning the sound from the altenator he immediately said it's going bibi. So i'll be looking for a new one but it'll cost me dearly.... Damn i warned the guys of my repairshop that it was dying...

Anyway, thanks for your help and i'll let you know the outcome wille be. Wish me luck..

A pontiac lover who's missing the joy of riding his car right now...

Questor,

Instead of the entire alternator, you may want to examine the brushes. Worn brushes can be repalced fairly easily, and can breathe new life into an otherwise dead alternator. If the stator windings are tight and not burned, and the rotor checks out, check the rectifiers and heat sink/regulator assembly. If everything checks out electrically, clean it up, and replace the bearings and brushes. A set or brushes and new front bearing is about a $15.00 package in the U.S.
