350 overheating, ticking sound

My '88 GTA runs up to 240 degrees after being on the freeway. Sometimes it gets above 225 in city driving. I know that i dont have a air dam underneath. How else can you tell if the thermostat or waterpump isnt working without taking either out. With the engine cold and the radiator cap taken off, the coolant moves around. Also there is a ticking sound around the intake manifold.Any help would be appreciated.

You answered your own question. Without the air dam that's why you're running 240* on the freeway. As for the 225* in town, if your cooling system is stock then that is normal, the fan doesn't kick on till 230*.
