Beware of the new SS!

Bought an 06 Impala SS about 5 weeks ago. While I know alot of motorheads don't like the idea that is FWD don't under estimate its ability. For stock - she goes with a good old fashioned Chevy 5.3. Or should I say new fashioned! She sounds real nice too. They say she is noisy on the HWY, she is, its the sound of the 303 HP. I don't mind that at all. Reminds me of that old Grand National purr. I know its not the fastest car on the street but this car has been taken a beatin by many online. Pedal response is awesome. Trac control works as it should and torque steer is minimal although I'm not gonna lie you gotta get used to this car and know when to hit it. She also may not be a looker like the Charger but the interior is very well done. Overall its a very nice car. And can we please stop camparing this car to an Accord, Altima and Camry? Thats a joke. If offered, at a light, I won't even waste my time and money by punching the pedal with gas prices being soo high! LOL Still lookin for my first offer too.

P.S. Can someone please raise the speed limit to around 140 MPH?

You can't compare your car to an Accord for quality reasons. Out of your league.

The impala SS is not my cup of tea and I can't understand why it has front wheel drive.

WHY ARE YOU TELLING US THIS ON A THIRDGEN CAMARO-FIREBIRD WEBSITE?

its so if us thirdgens run across one, we should expect a loss if we are not modded.

i do believe those cars run high 13's, so its bolt on/stalled L98 territory

That's bull****. It's not like it's a draw through turbo carb set-up on an air cooled Beetle. I'm sure it has perfectly fine street maners.

**For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, on a set-up like I mentioned, it's either barely running, or you're flooring it and hardly able to keep it on the road.

Sounds like a FAST ride. But just a note... the SS is faster than a stock ROC! No mods yet of course.

That's because they don't make any mods for them yet. Yes It is an SBC, but that doesn't change the fact that it's in a fwd platorm, mods will be expensive. I bet headers are around $900 when they come out. I also may be faster stock for stock than an Iroc or GTA, but it handles like crap and sounds like crap thanks to DOD.

Thanks for the sales pitch, btw.

What exactly handles like that? The SS? And what does the DOD have to do with the handling? The DOD is extremely smooth also. Yes its not a "sportscar" but handles decent for its size.

I am also aware that there are no mods yet, It is MY car. There will be though.

And yw for the sales pitch... I am an ex car salesman too.

"What exactly handles like that?"

What exactly is english? What do you mean by that question?

"What does DOD have to do with handling?"

I never made any remark saying it did. Learn to read.

Says above "it handles like crap", you wrote it. Read it it does. In English... what car were you referring to? Just wondering. And YOU mentioned DOD too!

^^^ Means there are no manufacturers making modification for the 5.3L FWD motor at this time because so few people own these $30k+ cars. Meaning not enough demand.

^^^^ means, yes it is a small block V8 LS4, but that's where the similarities end. None of the parts work with the other LS motors. Everything will be custom and therefore expensive. Headers alone will cost $2000 to produce. I have already looked that up. A given header company, that would even want to tackle such a low number job, would demand $2000 and 4-6 weeks to have your car to fab headers. Since there are no headers yet, no one is going to make a cam for it, and especially no one will make $3k-4k heads for the motor. So basically all you might have is an intake and cat back exhaust. The intake you can make on your own, but the exhaust, again because of lack of demand, will run you $7-900.

^^^^ means people have cracked off 13.9 at over 100mph with cars like yours (Impalla SS, Monte SS, GP GXP ). which is faster than an Iroc by a couple tenths and a few mph. But you are talking stock for stock. That is the only time your car will be faster than an Iroc. Let's say you invest $4000 into each car. You "might" have headers and exhaust. But the Iroc, thanks to a huge aftermarket, will have his/her choice of headers, cam, heads, better intake, and computer tuning. Not to mention gear ratios for the rear. Something the LS4 cars won't have for a long time, probably not ever. Because of demand. Not enough of it.

Handling, you have a FWD car, most of the weight will be in the front. Not good for handling. Small sway bars, not good for handling. Soft cushy springs, not good for handling. Tall skinny tires, not good for handling. And tall ride height, not good for handling. RWD will always be better at launching than FWD. All the weight transfers towards the rear of the car when accelerating. Gigantic sway bars, good for handling. Firmer springs, good for handling. Wider lower profile tires, good for handling. And a shorter ride height, better for handling.

No where in the sentence did I say that DOD has anything to do with handling. All I said was that because of the DOD EXHAUST sounds like crap. That is because the computer will shutdown 4 of the 8 cylinders when the car isn't under load, usually when in cruise control.

I do not like the way those cars handle, the steering is so damn sensative especially on the v8 models.... and it looks like a honda accord and or toyota camry from a distance... I dont like any new Chevrolet cars, they look way to close to Japanese crap. In my opinion only New Chevy Trucks, and the corvette are still good looking vehicles.

Didn't mean to come off like a sales pitch. I had an 85 Z28 and loved it. More the style than the power though. I was just picking up for the SS cause it takes a little bit of a beatin on these forums. Thanks for the tech info. My expertise is jet engines. Im not quite as good with carburation. Thanks.

The new V8 front drivers hual some butt.

Dont underestimate them.

I'll take DOD any day of the week, who cars if it doesnt sound v8 muscular when I'm rolling on a road trip.

Whopping 40 ms or so and you have all 8 cylinders back :-)

I just wish they made a mean FWD package if there going to make them FWD.

Big ole brakes, corners flat as can be and so on and so forth.

They all lack in the handling department unfortuneately.

Besides the more LS derivitives out there, just means cheaper prices for us to snag them for swaps :-)

I see a resemblence in the fact that they are both four door sedans. I think the Impala looks more like a Malibu myself.

American designers are the LAST thing GM and Ford needs. All their **** is borning and no one is buying it.

Exactly. Everything GM puts out now looks the same. The the older cars were great, now everything is boring. Just look at Pontiac, every damn thing looks the same with a different badge. And you cant say its because we now have foreign designers who are designing them, because almost every where else the cars look nice.

How is this thread not locked yet??? The car sucks, it looks like a Honda, its FWD, overpriced, and for what they cost they should run quicker than a measly 13.9

Sound like you spend alot of $$$ to go fast. Hmmm, the SS is stock. Faster than your crew stock for stock. So what are you comparing? I spent 30K and have a nice looking, new, fast Chevy. It is a CHEVY with a CHEVY 5.3 Lit engine. You spent plenty in mods and have some cool fast rides. I agree they don't have that "muscular" look. But I can surely tell the difference from this car to Japs! It is what it is. And its a little quicker than a 13.9. Its 5.7 and about 13.5 STOCK. Show me which one in your crew beat that stock. Maybe Im wrong. I don't think so. By the way the Chevelle is a cool car! And this is the fastest Impala ever. You gotta give it something.

Ive sold all types of cars and yeas drove many. Too many people think EVERYTHING is JAP. Jap quality, Jap looks etc. Its a CHEVY. While some may not like the looks, this is the year 2006. This is the new thing. Its called "overly modern" I guess. You tell me what resembles an 89 Iroc? A 68 Chevelle? Does the new Charger really resemble the old one? Not really. Hows about the nre Stang... its ok. Bottom line is that its the new generation. Im not crazy about it either but what can you do?!?

I'm not trashing the looks of your car in particular. I certainly do feel that 98% of American cars, well hell, 90% of ALL cars are boring looking, but a lot of domestic cars don't have any appeal. Despite the continuation of stale, boring designs, I'm happy to see some new cars. Instead of the Taurus, there is the Ford 500. Your Impala has some balls for instance. Even though the GTO and Charger will probably die out soon, and are so large that they are ludicris and never should have been made at all, they are a breath of fresh air from the large sedans of yesterday.

I actually dont have a lot of money wrapped up in any of my cars to be running what Im running. My Chevelle for example, I have $1100 in that 454, including parts, machine work....and what I paid for the motor.

Just for the record, yes, your car just is faster than ours stock. Our cars we're built 20 years before yours and you just do beat us, congratulations. You beat a car that came from the smog/power restricted 80s. Oh yea, a straight line is the only time you would beat a stock gta or 5.7 iroc, and you dont get anywhere in a straight line.

I believe Top Fuel is straight line, isn't it? the local race strip is straight. Highways are usually pretty straight too.

What does top fuel have to do with anything? Do they get somewhere? Yea they get there fast but they cant even go half a mile. So what do you do when you run out of the straight line? Youre going to slow way down or spin out. There a lot more to a car than just driving in a straight line. Any jackass can hit a pedal and make it go down a strip.

I still can not fathom why you would be up here bragging about your mediocre car. Its nothing. And dont say its for luxury, because thats definetly not a luxury car. Its definetly not a performance car either. I would much rather buy a decent thirdgen and spend maybe 1k on it and be faster than you, plus it would still have a lot more style. Your probably bought is just because it says SS. Have fun with you average car that blends in with everything else.
