GTA L98 1987 vs Volvo S40 2002

Hey guys. My cuzin is comin up from florida in a few days with his 2002 Volvo S40. Hes really excited, cuz he knows i own my baby.....1987 GTA Trans AM. Anyways were planning on going cruising together, and going with that, there might the occasional "race".

His car: 2002 Volvo S40 - jason's Volvo "Blue Haze"

Performance Mods:
K&N Filter

My car: 1987 Pontiac Trans Am - Gene's Pontiac "The Beast"

Performance Mods:
MAC 1 5/8 Headers, Dynomax Super Converter 3", Flowtech 3" Cut-out, McCord Powerplate II, Hooker 3" Cat-Back, MSD 6AL Ignition, TPIS AFPR, Hypertech Low-Temp Fan Switch, SLP CAI, SLP Air Foil, modded MAF, Jet 180Thermostat, Spohn Sub-Frame Connectors, MSD Cap, Rotor, Coil, and full tuneup.

If anything happens it probably be stop-light to stop-light action, though he might tempt me on the highway. So what do you guys think?

What kind of power do those things make anyway? You should beat him with your mods with little problem. That car looks like all bling. Sorry it's just that all the mods are in none horsepower building areas.

I looked up some info and edmunds and others have these stats for the Volvo S40 2002:

Base Number of Cylinders: 4
Base Engine Size: 1.9 liters
Base Engine Type: Inline 4
Horsepower: 160 hp
Torque: 177 ft-lbs.
Max Horsepower: 5250 rpm
Max Torque: 1800 rpm
Drive Type: FWD
Curb Weight: 2767 lbs

Doesnt look to mean to me, only that hes got a weight advantage. But maybe hes leds, and gizmos slow it down more hehe.

My wife's '05 Volvo S60 2.5T will absolutely SMOKE my car (keep in mind, my T/A vert is heavy and all stock). This little turbo five-cylinder is FASTER than you think (247hp). It runs the 1/4 mile in 14.8 at 99 mph bone stock.

But as far as the S40 goes, you will have no problem with him esp. with your mods.

And, above all, your car looks WAY cooler!

Hey guys my cuz just got here so we gonna cruise tonight. BTW today i also bumped my fuel PSI from 42 stock to 49. I dont know if that helps, but ive looked at the TPIS book and on this site and those claimed boost numbers looked attractive so i did it.

I cant know for sure if its gonna give it more boost, but with my mods, was that a smart move? I know, only a dyno or track could really tell but thats not possible atm!

Hehe ok ill be back later, drop me a line when i get back about the PSI.

Peace

Very smart mod, you should be able to feel a difference. It doesn't ultimately change the ammount of fuel except for a WOT but it gives it a better spray pattern as well as compensating for the extra fuel you would need with your mods. In the Tech Articles on this site there is a simlar graph showing nice torque gains on a stock 350 with this mod.

Ok just got back, which was pretty fun. He couldnt stay up to late cuz of a 10 hour trip next early morning but he is staying for the rest of the week when he gets back. But for tonight i just showed him the local cruise area. Nothing crazy, just relaxing having a good time.

We both took our cars out, cops were out in full force as usual there, so it wasnt the best conditions. But after all that and onw back home we get to a red light....

Of course you cant be contained to not try something all night. So he gives me the big smile and the nod, and im like ok man! We were just gonna go to the speed limit just for a "taste". I mean we both knew what was to happen, but who cares.

Light turns yellow from the side of the lights, indicating green is coming up for us. I let my brake go a little bit to get moving, so did he. Well then the light goes, and i give it slight tap to get it somewhat hook, but impossible with my tires and torque hehe. So anyways right after that tap, i slam on the gas, exhaust screams loud, and first gear is pulling back, by 2nd gear my car has got a car length on him, and just before 3rd, i let go as i was gaining more, but the speed limit came up real quick, which was only 40 i believe. Not even a 0-60 lol. Eh who cares, those few seconds get me excited anyways.

It wasnt anything super special, but i didnt need to go 100 to prove anything. Now he is staying till next weekend i believe, so we might try more later, depending if his soon-to-be wife lets him hehe.
