Challenger: Not much of a Challenge

Cming from a wed. rec. last nite around midnite, was on the hiway cruising home around 60, 2 chargers, a antifreze green and a white one. along with a all blacked out challenger came onto the hiway from the feeder, they spotted me i guess since they were speeding and finally slowed back down. to line up with my car. the white charger came around to my side and the black challenger lined to the pass. my gf gave me a stupid look, and just nodded, the challenger revved a few times, so did the white charger. i just kept on drving normal. the pass in the charger kept signaling me to go, speed off and slow down. challenger just revved.
i was getting antsy.
so my gf told me ok, just go but not too fast. i know it will bother u all night.
i dropped from 6th to 5th, the cars heard the downshift.
i rolled my windows down and signaled the 3 honks. rolled windows back up. charger honked 3 times. i cut it loose, down to 3, 7k rpm, shift 7k rpm.
no cars in sight, only lights in my view mirrors. BUSes. shut down at 150
gf was on the invisible brakes and gripping the handle, pinned back to the seat. they finlly rolled up on me, kept wanting to again. dirty looks
i just waved bye to those punks

reward: i got to sleep on couch.
LOL

Re: Challenger: Not much of a Challenge

i usually dont post much about street racing. but i thought that challenger was going to at least stay even. no chance. it did look and sound mean as hell. the black wheels had a bright red lip. looked really nice. sounded like it ran 9's in the 1/4.
meh

1. Challenger's are heavy butt ugly cars. The interior looks VERY cheap.

2. LOL at your GF telling you to not go too fast, and you shut down at 150! LOL What does she consider fast?

3. Good kill/kills.

Re: Challenger: Not much of a Challenge

While Dodge did a pretty good job of making the Challenger look both retro and new, they really mucked up the performance of the car - a true shame.

4200lbs is about 600lbs more than I expected the car to be when I heard about it a few years ago. Unfortunately you need to put the big 6.1L Hemi in the car to get it into the 13's - the 5.7 only runs low to mid 14's in a 300, Charger, or Magnum. If they only made it 3500lb and stuck the 425hp motor in it - hello Corvette.

Has anyone besides me noticed how high the Challenger sits? I was at a car show last summer and a brand new one was sitting next to a GN (not even lowered) and it was 5 or 6" taller than the GN.

the LS3 Vette only weighs 3200lbs and has an underrated 430hp or 436hp (depending on exhaust options). bye bye Challenger... even at 3500lbs

Never said Z06...

The main problem is that cars now are getting heavier with each generation, the 4th gen F Bodies weigh more (or even the same) even with a 140lb weigh break for the LS1 motors. Ditto for the new Mustangs and obviously the Dodge LX cars are at least 500lbs too heavy.

The only two cars that are at a good weight today are the Corvettes and the new 370Z. Obviously the 370Z has no real power upside, unless you want to spend a bundle to turbo it.

I think that an optimized 3500lb car with a 425hp V8 would give the base 6.2L LS3 Vette a run for its money - maybe a tenth or three slower in the 1/4 mile. Certainly better than a 540hp mustang that barely keeps up.

Oh I see, but either way, the ls3 is pushing about the same power and would still weight less, i guess 300-400 lbs is about .3 - .4 seconds. sounds reasonable, idk what dodges problem is,

i persoanlly love the body style of the challenger, i was messing around with the RT version the other day, i was reving up at about 30 mph when he stomped it and so did i, but my kick down wasn't hooked up yet so i just stayed in 3rd, it was lame, if i'da shifted down i think it would have been a better run, he just tore away from me, what does the RT run in the QM? cause i still think i would have lost, i think i would only run a mid 14...

Saw an SRT8 Challenger at the 1/8th mile track awhile back, ran well into the 8's with a fair amount of tire spin.

they were prolly both v-6's. you gotta understand that most ppl have never actually drivien a car with power. so they get a v6 charger or challenger that has a 250 hp v6 and think they are damn nascar drivers.

challengers are greatly overrated nice kill

and idk.. the gen 1 camaro wasnt exactly a light car (not sure on real weight) but i remember reading the 396 camaro could place a 13 down with dead stock **** manifolds and exhaust and a th350. when it comes to muscle cars weight really never got down low until our gen and the fox. a 3800 lb charger seems about right considering they wanted to make it look simular to its 90-70s predicessor witch weight maybe 200 lbs more

I bet even my little 2.8 camaro could beat those with some simple bolt ons.

and idk.. the gen 1 camaro wasnt exactly a light car (not sure on real weight) but i remember reading the 396 camaro could place a 13 down with dead stock **** manifolds and exhaust and a th350. when it comes to muscle cars weight really never got down low until our gen and the fox. a 3800 lb charger seems about right considering they wanted to make it look simular to its 90-70s predicessor witch weight maybe 200 lbs more
really? my 66 chevII 406,4spd,bench seat,4:10 12bolt, rear seat delet,weight..2900# with me in it...and 4 wheel drum brakes also 69 Z28,DZ302,4spd,heater&radio delet,12 bolt, big gas tank....3000#.

Nice kill, I don't know why everybody is so jones'd to street race their new cars. I stomped a hemi dodge ram when they first came out and the guy was like but its a Hemi and you just have a beat up Camaro.

I really just don't like street racing, i hit 140 racing a stang, brought it back down to 60 (on a 2 lane) and met a cop. my car handles for crap at speed anyways to much front end rake. they really have to pester me to get me to bite.

I wont even race my diesel on the street... i got nothing to prove, actually I drive faster when no ones looking.

BTW THAT LS IN A VIPER THING WAS BLASPHEMY, just saying LOL

i know, but hey i can machine, assemble and swap a ls into just about anything.
i dont think i would ever find a viper v10 for cheep, comparing to a 6.0 ls engine.
im also not a big fan of roll racing, thats y im building my 3rd gen.
they get so much disrespect by just about everybody on the street. everybody expects some bolt ons tpi.
the lt1 guys are pretty bad, and so are the mustang guys.seems like they hate 3rd gens. the most. i dont know why so many ppl look down on 3rd gens. most of the mustang guys i know or meet usually have more negative things to say. they always bring up the 305 motors.

really??? thats interesting considering the third gen is known as the lightest of all camaros...and we still weigh over 3k so i would love to know what you took out of your z28 to get it down that low.. also considering my fathers 69 ss with a light aluminum ls2 swap in it weighs 3700 (took it out last night to the truck weigh station cuz i got interested in their weight after my post) ill take it out and take a pic of it on the scale and the numbers if you would like

Re: Challenger: Not much of a Challenge

i realized as i read this post above i weighed my dads car with me in it.. im 240 lbs i id probably give another 30 lbs to the subs and amp in the back.. so the car weighs around 3300 i was wrong i apologize . but still if it weighs 3300 lbs with an aluminum v8 what did it weigh back when the iron v8 was in it???. and yeah i read articles about them being curb weight of 3100 and even some rediculous 2900.. but remember in the late 60's early 70s many car companies false advertized. ford had its 429 rated at 430crank hp. when nowadays they have found those motors stock to produce upwards of 500. ive read many companies did this too keep their cars within a certain class. who knows what they said about other issues such as weight. not trying to knock any company even ford but back then there wasnt a greedy guy with a lawyer ready to sue for a false weight on his car
