Sad day for thirdgens...

Me and my bro just smoked a 85 IROC-Z

In my old mans 95 K1500 Chevy. 350 Carb, Accel Plugs-Wires, Holly Carb.

Rolling down mainstreet, He decideds to burp us.

Bad idea. Bro Drops neutral, Gives it a 5 grand rev.

He launches and we launch, we had him about 3/4 car lenght to the stop sign.

He rolls down the window, I yell, 350?

He says Hell yeah.

Good race, But a sad IROC.

Re: Sad day for thirdgens...

Well a 350 isn't a stock motor for an 85 Iroc..so who knows how bad that motor was...

Not to mention you didn't say how far you raced.

There were no OE 350's in an 85 IROC. Originally, my 85 IROC was an LG4 with 155 hp. The L69 had 190 and the LB9, 215. So, "IF" the IROC was in truth a 305 and only got beat by 3/4s of a length, I'd say that wasn't so sad.

Re: Sad day for thirdgens...

Given that thirdgens are generally pretty anemic where horse power is concerned, I'm not surprised at a 20-year-old newer truck with a 350 would win (though if the IROC was only a 305, the truck really didn't perform that well, IMO). Thirdgens were kickass on the skidpad and slaloms and few full-sized trucks, then or now, could provide much competition.

I'm also calling BS because I know that my 89 formy from a dig would not get traction through first but when it grabbed, it would pull on a trail blazer ss. I am saying either BS or the third gen was a 2.8 that was in bad tune. Hell, my 2.8 fiero with a 5 speed would kill a k1500 truck and I have raced the two cars next to each other and my bird's little 350 tpi wastes the fiero by about 10 to 12 car lengths in the quarter mile!

LQ9 is not even close to 400 hp and the TQ Management turns it into a SLUG. The torquey TPI engines will easily jump that truck.

I have a 5.7 TPI in my Chevrolet Van. 0-60 in under 7 seconds at 6,000 lbs.

I really doubt a stockish 95 Chevrolet K1500 can take my heavy fullsize van, much less a TPI F-body.

Hell my 4.7 powered Dodge Ram Quad Cab has out-run a few RCSB 5.7 TBI trucks at the track and it was a DOG.

I doubt the IROC in question was actually a 350; people constantly are fooled when buying second hand 305 equipped cars since they don't check block serial numbers and visually they look the same.

That is true. Alot of people from my area think that all IROC's came with the 350. My old man picked up a 88 iroc years ago with a 350 and he claimed that all iroc's with the 350 where all LT1 350 engines.

Bad idea. Bro Drops neutral, Gives it a 5 grand rev.

He launches and we launch, we had him about 3/4 car lenght to the stop sign.

He rolls down the window, I yell, 350?

if he knows about thirdgens, doesn't sound like he does, it wouldn't have a third brake light, so if its an iroc it would have to be an 85

It's possible that someone swapped one in. In 24 years of ownership, someone along the line could have swapped in a 350. My bet is that someone told him when they sold him the car it was a 350 since that sounds sooo much better for resale.
