Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
So I drive out of Market Basket, accelerating to 30 mph, which is completely legal, and stop at hannafords to get some foods. The manager walks by and says "I saw you take out of Market Basket like, what are you doing?" I guess he was talking about me going fast or something, which I wasn't. I've got glasspacks so it's pretty loud. When I'm going 30mph at around 3-4000 rpm people give me angry looks like I'm going 80. One women started yelling slow down at me, when I was going 25. Why can't people get loud doesn't mean fast. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post this, but it's aggrivating that I get in 'trouble' for nothing.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
People are dumba$$'s, if your at 3-4k going 30 than your probably like me. You accelerate by putting your foot at least half way to the floor. I get dirty looks all the time, WITH A 2.8! Stock exhaust with few rust holes. Not really loud, but sorta throaty. To be honest I don't think there's anything you can do about, unless you wanna drive like granny and lose the glasspacks, YAWN!! I believe that you can't get an "unnecessary acceleration" ticket without spinning your wheels or some crap like that. You'll get used to the looks. And when someone gives a nice one you'll have some tiny reassurance that at least 2% of the population aren't pansies.

I guarantee if they were young and had an awesome, loud, fast car they'd do the same thing, but nooo they're angry cause they buy boring slow 90s cars.

that have extra space for their kids, and their band equipment or soccer equipment. i hope i never fall into that group of dads that compare cargo space of thier van to other dads cargo space in his van.......
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
i can't even picture driving any other car but a third gen i have owed 3 in the past 10 years. but sometimes i do rev up my car most people like it a few that don't.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I get yelled at all the time... It has gotten to a point where I really just don't care anymore... I mean I drive all legit. I have 2 street racing tickets, and a speeding ticket. I don't have room for another ticket. People just don't get it.

Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I had an old lady yelling at me to slow down while I was going below the speed limit and coming to a stop sign. Being me, I stopped, turned around and had a little talk with that old lady...long story short, she tried to get me to join her church...bleh. Don't worry, I was respectful, just had to politely tell her off and explain to her the speed limit (lived here 22 years; her only a year). Probably has to do with me looking like a young teen, apparently I'm lookin' for trouble. Hmmph.

Are we not aware of stereotypes?
Totally agree. By flicking birds at people and staring them out in a loud car is not going to get the thirdgen community any support. I was hoping this kind of BA youth attitude had moved onto 4th gens and people who had 3rd gens were enthusiasts, in it for the long haul.
Also some of the grammer on this board is shocking.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
That's the issue with this new generation, undisciplined, unintelligent, and disrespectful to all. I would know, my sister caught that bug. Thankfully, I own the third gens and not her. I think I have shaken my head at more third gen owners than ricers as of late. Poorly maintained, obnoxiously loud (the wrong way), and believe they own the road. And it's not just third gens, but almost all of this supposed Generation Y (it is 'Y' right?).
Not to insult you or start anything, ZZ42Fast, but just to let you know, it is spelled "Grammar." I personally believe someone shouldn't try to correct another when they are in the wrong as well. Just my two cents, please don't take it the wrong way.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
good points all , but maybe looking for attention that yall never got in younger years . just my thoughts , but not a real good image to display for 3rd gen. owners . oh well , maybe again people/public don't like others to drive like a stupid JERK !!! . just my personal thoughts , i am older than most on this forum and hate it when i see younger people drive STUPID . i still like to get it on with my car , but within reason . i expect to get BASHED for my post , but i also feel some support . after a few tickets your thoughts may change . be safe & good luck .
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I get the same, but unfortunately that's due to my lack of exhaust after it comes off the motor. I'm trying to get one on there, because I even find it annoying that it sounds like I'm flooring it at half throttle to just go the normal speed limit. Most of the time I end up shifting quite early and using very little throttle just to keep it running at a nice quite pace. I may be part of a younger generation, but I do realise in this generation and the ones after me a severe lack of common sense. I think I'm one of the few that actually considers when I drive through residential areas at night that some people may be sleeping, other people drive too (even if some are idiots), i'm not a perfect driver I make plenty of mistakes, and that I don't own the road for any little race I might feel like.

Best you can do is just move on.
just to put it out there, i think im very much so ehe same way about how i drive, however if im going say 20 in a 25 and get looks and people yelling at me to slow down they get the bird, and if i feel extra nice i give them a burn out. however late at night no one is out and i see no point in waking sleeping people so i just roll on by.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
To be honest I think the Camaro will always represent a stereotype. And I guess I don't help it much either. I listen to Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Billy Squire, all the stuff everyone hates. My bird has straight pipe and my camaro has a few holes in the exhaust. But I do try and keep it quite when I drive at night or in residential area's, except my own. I have the pleasure of living next to several car buffs.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
There is a difference between a loud car and a car that sounds good. I dont know what galsspacks you have, but years ago i rigged up a set of duals with little 12" glasspacks and the car was so friggen loud you had to yell at the person sitting next to you so thye could hear you. That is too loud and does not sound good, nor does it have any place on the street.
That being said, my car is quite loud, but a good sounding loud. I dont think i have never been yelled at or looked at weird because of the cars sound. you need to understand that there are places for high rpm shifts, cruising around on the street really isnt one. You shouldn't be at 4k rpm around town.
This also has a lot to do with what the car looks like
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
i agree with novafirebirdguy. I think the Firebird and Camaro will always draw attention and fill a certain stereotype no matter what they sound or look like. My car got dirty looks before and after i dropped the muffler. Some people will never respect cars the way that we do.
the car looks more than presentable, i dont see why people bitch, unless it is absurdly loud. I can understand people bitching at a rustbuck POS thats loud as hell and falling apart, sorry no offence, but thats kinda what i was expecting. Its nice to be surprised

Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
Nobody here gives muscle cars a bad look. Just the other day about 200 muscle cars/rat rods (most with just open headers/straight pipes) took a cruise and ended up in our little town, they all drove back and forth until about 9pm. Then again, they all looked very presentable. There was a couple imports, they all got booed and laughed at. I didn't dare take my camaro through there.
As long as your car is nice looking, sounds good, it doesn't matter how loud it is, or how it's being driven. Guess the only reason I get some looks is because of the outside shape of my car (don't have the money to get the looks up), and the fact I look young. Anywho, it's late, and I'm rambling. I hope I made some sense?
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I use to get looks like that when I had my 89. Its probably because the majority of people who drive third gens are younger adults. Around here every teenager has a third gen or a fox body mustang. However I dont get bad looks in my ws6. Maybe because it doesnt look as much like a muscle car?
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
Purest dont consider any car after 1972 a muscle car...........you know a car with 175 HP factory just isnt the same as a car with 300 factory Hp. I had a lowly Malibu with 250 Hp with a 2 bbl carb. And tho I do love these cars. It's kinda hard for me to call them muscle cars myself........
Cars are just now getting back to the Hp they were back in the late 60's early 70's. See what gas is doing? Government regulation? Notice a pattern? History repeating itself?

Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
actually a poor running motor that isnt making as much power can be noiser than a good running motor that is making power. if a motor is over cammed it may sound good but that's because part of the burn is happening in the exhaust manifold/header
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
It's just part of having a loud car. I've had my share of run-ins with these *******s and you just gotta learn to make it VERY obvious you're driving slowly in some situations. I CRAWL through parking lots for that reason. That and they scare me... Way too many fender benders happen in parking lots.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I cringe when I see people parking next to me or parallel parking near me. People open their doors to wide, they hit cars, scuff em, and they drive away.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
ha i like to drive extra slow so everyone can hear my cam idle blawh...blawh...blawhh its so addicting and i also have a glasspack havent got a dirty look yet other than stangs but everyone else gives me thumbs up and the kids looks on their faces are great most kids just drop their bikes or toys and stare at my car as i drive by them also a lot of cougars like to give me a wink
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I also drive a 3rd Gen Firebird. I love it. It is not nice on the drivers side, or front, but the rest of it is decent. I have a straight on it with a 18" glass pack. It isn't extremely loud, but sounds nice. 305 pushing it, so decent. I am forever getting good looks, bad looks, disgusted looks, anything. I really do think it is the older population that thinks it is dumb to own a fast car. But most of them did the same thing we are doing. Being able to own your dream car is amazing in itself, but for people to tell you its stupid to have and that going fast is retarted? No Sir. I love going fast, but im not about to squeal tires on every takeoff. So all in all, I LOVE 3rd GENS and if you own it, drive it how you want to.

im deffently younger, 19, and i actually agree. i hate it when stangs/3rds or 4ths/ imports drive like jerks, really annoying. but i do get on my camaro, a lot haha.
i get bout 50/50 on the looks. good bc its a 5spd and sounds nice, bad bc it is not a looker, and bc im learning to drive this very touchy 5spd. so lots of hihg revs.
i hate loud cars, well at idle anywas. when the throttle is open and its at 5 grand, then ya loud noise is good, but at 950 rpm and it sounds like 3 grand...cmon.

how can you hate a loud car? thats like going to the drag strip to watch the funny cars only to complain that you can't hear the commentator cause the engines were too loud while the cars were idling.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
easy i hate drag racing im more the drift/ circut guy. dont get me wrong some loudness is ok just not the kind where it sounds like your racing at idle. its hard to explain.

not its not...
again, power makes noise, noise does not make power.
i have flowmaster 80 series muffler on my camaro with a mild 350. it has a mild but noticable cam in it. the heads suck so it doesnt make much power over stock, and might actually make less than the 305 (the prev owner built it and is an idiot)
if i had to do it over again, i would have kept the stock muffler.
it sounds good loud, but most of the volume increase is below 2000 rpms
IMO, a car should make the most noise at max RPM, or at least near it.
not at idle
if you hear me drive by, it sounds good, and is actually pretty intimidating, but as soon as i get on it, it becomes clear that its only a facade, and my car is only putting down about 250-300 hp max to the ground.
not fun, and kinda r!cer if you ask me.
oh well.
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I feel you, Dragon. My car has no muffler (bought it that way) and sounds mean as hell, especially when I stomp it, but it needs a rebuild and a torque converter, so I dont go anywhere fast, lol.

I got the same thing every day leaving high school in my Chevy Truck. My principal just didn't get it, I just tell him," it just sounds like its going fast."
Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I used to hate driving my loud 81 z28 when I was in highschool cops would always give me a hard time, because my car was orange. But, my car was a factory engine other than flowmasters. It made 175ish at the fly.
The one thing I noticed was my car was respected as a fast car. No one would rev at lights or want to race me. People just assumed looks and sound= fast.
But with a modest thirdgen peopel give me crap. I got mine senior year. I have a 400 bored to 406 it runs high 12's and i noticed I get crap from everyone. My exhaust is a dynomax kit that is quiet. I didn't want trouble but now I find every kid and guy in a parking lot says they can beat me. I get flybyes al the time, people cut me off thinking their in a fast and furious movie, and someone races me at every ight without my knowledge. Anyone else have this problem?
But, I rememebr when I first took it to the dragstrip, there was this guy with a 350z who pulled up in the next staging lane. He saw I was there with my girlfriend. He was there with his. We talked and he told me he just got his z. He seemed like a nice guy. I suppose since he thought I was a nice guy he said. "Don't worry buddy, I'll take it easy on you so your friends won't give ya a hard time." After I smoked him all the way down the track. It wasn't my friends wo gave me the hard time.

Re: Why do people always give me bad looks when I go by?
I cant stand people that have cars that sound like they are going 80 when they are going 30. Why does it have to be so loud? you can have a great sounding car without blowing peoples windows out. It doesnt matter what you drive, bikes, muscle cars, or ricers. it's like everyeone that does that has extremley low self esteem, so by having an obnoxiously loud car they can get attention. If you are at the track its a different story. I for one am a person that wishes law enforcement would start enforcing noise ordinances.
just my two cents

nice ride, loveing it. and actually in my 88 i did...a stock v6 auto. ppl would want to race. kinda annoyed me. but here in roanoke its a stang vs maro roadways. ricers come and go but the stangs just overwhalm everything. and the drivers dont help.
